Detailed tephrochronological studies in Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, permitted documentation of 24 Holocene key-marker tephra layers related to the largest explosive eruptions from 11 volcanic centers. Each layer was traced for tens to hundreds of kilometers away from the source volcano; its stratigraphic position, area of dispersal, age, characteristic features of grain-size distribution, and chemical and mineral composition confirmed its identification. The most important marker tephra horizons covering a large part of the peninsula are (from north to south; ages given in14C yr B.P.) SH2(≈1000 yr B.P.) and SH3(≈1400 yr B.P.) from Shiveluch volcano; KZ (≈7500 yr B.P.) from Kizimen volcano; KRM (≈7900 yr B.P.) from Karymsky caldera; KHG (≈7000 yr B.P.) from Khangar volcano; AV1(≈3500 yr B.P.), AV2(≈4000 yr B.P.), AV4(≈5500 yr B.P.), and AV5(≈5600 yr B.P.) from Avachinsky volcano; OP (≈1500 yr B.P.) from the Baraniy Amfiteatr crater at Opala volcano; KHD (≈2800 yr B.P.) from the “maar” at Khodutka volcano; KS1(≈1800 yr B.P.) and KS2(≈6000 yr B.P.) from the Ksudach calderas; KSht3(A.D. 1907) from Shtyubel cone in Ksudach volcanic massif; and KO (≈7700 yr B.P.) from the Kuril Lake-Iliinsky caldera. Tephra layers SH5(≈2600 yr B.P.) from Shiveluch volcano, AV3(≈4500 yr B.P.) from Avachinsky volcano, OPtr(≈4600 yr B.P.) from Opala volcano, KS3(≈6100 yr B.P.) and KS4(≈8800 yr B.P.) from Ksudach calderas, KSht1(≈1100 yr B.P.) from Shtyubel cone, and ZLT (≈4600 yr B.P.) from Iliinsky volcano cover smaller areas and have local stratigraphic value, as do the ash layers from the historically recorded eruptions of Shiveluch (SH1964) and Bezymianny (B1956) volcanoes. The dated tephra layers provide a record of the most voluminous explosive events in Kamchatka during the Holocene and form a tephrochronological timescale for dating and correlating various deposits.

An ash layer that appears geochemically correlative with Mt. St. Helens tephra set S occurs in a sequence of Pleistocene lake sediments in the Ohop Valley of the southern Puget Lowland, below Vashon till deposited during the maximum late Pleistocene advance (Fraser Glaciation) of the Puget Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. The Puget Lobe reached its maximum southern extent ca. 14,000–14,500 yr B.P., and at least part of set S is evidently somewhat older. Previous radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dates for set S have ranged from 13,000 to 16,000 yr B.P.

Geochemically correlative deposits of set S tephra occur in slackwater sediments coeval with the Missoula Floods in eastern Washington, produced by jökulhlaups through the Purcell Trench Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. These relationships suggest that advances of glacier lobes on the southern margin of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet were nonsynchronous, as the Pucell Trench lobe east of the Cascade Range advanced to its maximum southern extent prior to the time of the eruption of set S, before the Puget Lobe west of the Cascades reached its maximum southern extent.

An exceptional stratigraphic and pedologic record of Pleistocene environmental conditions occurs at the Kieler Site in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin. Peoria, Roxana, Loveland, and pre-Loveland loesses overlie weathered bedrock residuum. The pre-Loveland unit previously has been included as part of the residuum at other Driftless Area sites. Early and middle Pleistocene loesses in the Mississippi Valley are normally absent at most localities. Rather than nondeposition, we suggest the apparent absence of pre-Illinoian loess units is due in part to erosion, but also to weathering that renders loesses unrecognizable so they are classified as “residuum.”

The eastern Mediterranean continental paleoclimate during the past 25,000 years was determined by a high-resolution petrographic, stable isotopic, and age study of speleothems from Soreq Cave, Israel. δ18O–δ13C trends indicate that all speleothems older than 7000 yr formed under conditions that differ from those of today. The period from 25,000 to 17,000 yr B.P. was characterized by the highest δ18O and δ13C values, which indicate deposition at temperatures of 12°–16°C, annual rainfall of 300–450 mm, and vegetation typical of a mixed C3–C4type. From 17,000 to 10,000 yr B.P. (deglaciation in northern Europe) δ18O values dropped progressively, correlative with warming (2°–3°C) and a gradual increase in precipitation. A simultaneous decrease in δ13C gives a range expected for C3-type vegetation. This period also shows significant δ18O and δ13C “spikes” which are correlatable with global events (e.g., Heinrich events and the Younger Dryas Stade). The speleothems that grew between 10,000 and 7000 yr B.P. have a unique petrography showing irregular thin laminae of various colors and much detritus. They have the lowest δ18O (corresponding to ∼1000 mm rain) coupled with the highest δ13C (caused by flooding events which stripped the soil cover). From 7000 to 1000 yr B.P. conditions became closer to those of today. This study demonstrates that global events which were recognized in Northern Europe and North Africa are also evident in the eastern Mediterranean and are reflected principally by large changes in the rainfall rate.

Sediment cores collected from the southern basin of Lake Titicaca (Bolivia/Peru) on a transect from 4.6 m above overflow level to 15.1 m below overflow level are used to identify a new century-scale chronology of Holocene lake-level variations. The results indicate that lithologic and geochemical analyses on a transect of cores can be used to identify and date century-scale lake-level changes. Detailed sedimentary analyses of subfacies and radiocarbon dating were conducted on four representative cores. A chronology based on 60 accelerator mass spectrometer radiocarbon measurements constrains the timing of water-level fluctuations. Two methods were used to estimate the14C reservoir age. Both indicate that it has remained nearly constant at ∼25014C yr during the late Holocene. Core studies based on lithology and geochemistry establish the timing and magnitude of five periods of low lake level, implying negative moisture balance for the northern Andean altiplano over the last 3500 cal yr. Between 3500 and 3350 cal yr B.P., a transition from massive, inorganic-clay facies to laminated organic-matter-rich silts in each of the four cores signals a water-level rise after a prolonged mid-Holocene dry phase. Evidence of other significant low lake levels occurs 2900–2800, 2400–2200, 2000–1700, and 900–500 cal yr B.P. Several of the low lake levels coincided with cultural changes in the region, including the collapse of the Tiwanaku civilization.

The Quaternary stratigraphy of the Yangtze delta has been revealed by a deep (344.64 m) continuous borehole, the sediments of which are divided into four sections, the Early (Q1), Middle (Q2), and Late Pleistocene (Q3), and the Holocene (Q4). Six lithofacies include lacustrine, fluvial, coastal, drowned river channel, deltaic, and shallow marine in these time periods. The fluvial and lacustrine lithofacies prevailed during Q1and Q2; coastal and drowned river channel lithofacies periodically appeared in Q1, Q2, and Q3; shallow marine lithofacies dominated Q3; and deltaic lithofacies occurred in Q4. Based on stratigraphy, four transgressive events are inferred. Trace-element (Sr, Ba, B, Ga, V) content and ratios of Sr/Ba and B/Ga are considered with regard to their distribution in the various lithofacies. Geochemical facies criteria are established based on combined diagnostic indices: Sr > 160 ppm, B > 90 ppm, Sr/Ba > 0.35, B/Ga > 4.0 for the shallow marine lithofacies; Sr < 90 ppm, B < 50 ppm, Sr/Ba < 0.2, B/Ga < 2.5 for the terrigenous lithofacies. These indices correspond well to paleosalinity data obtained using the sedimentary phosphate method (Ca/Ca + Fe). Transgressive events identified by the geochemical indices are mostly the same as reflected by marine fossils. Nevertheless, geochemical indices can indicate the occurrence of a weak transgression, where marine fossils are rare.

Cheniers and oyster reefs are two essential components of Holocene strata on the coast of Bohai Bay, China. The existing nonconventional14C dates, often with unsuitable sample positions, less-tested samples, and unreasonable data comparisons, limit the refined analysis of the local chronostratigraphy. On the basis of a number of pretreatment routines, including geological investigations, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), δ13C measurement of shells, selection of appropriate shell species (Umboniumsp. and Terebridae) for14C dating, and determination of the local mean δ13C value (−2.68‰ PDB) for the common shells, a set of samples was radiocarbon-dated by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS). These new ages, obtained from the lower part of cheniers, enable us to estimate the initiation of the cheniers, and confirm that the existing nonconventional dates are often questionable due to unsuitable sample positions. Another two AMS ages, dated for two different microgrowth layers, precipitated in a varying water body, of the sameCrassostrea gigasshell are statistically identical within 2σ error. This implies that the different water masses in the coastal environment would be rapidly in balance with the contemporaneous atmospheric CO2. Both MARINE93 and INTERCAL93 were used for calibration of radiocarbon dates. These amended the time frame of the local Holocene history.

Analyses of phytoliths and carbon isotopes document change in late Quaternary grasslands in the Red Valley of the southern Black Hills. Late Pleistocene grassland composition was equivalent to the C3grass parklands of modern central Alberta. The rise of mixed grassland occurred rapidly between 11,000 and 9000 yr B.P. Early Holocene mixed grasslands included both short and tall C4grasses. A mid-Holocene erosional unconformity (ca. 8000 to 4500 yr B.P.) precludes phytolith or isotope analysis, but suggests lack of vegetation and landscape denudation caused by a drier climatic. Basin-wide stability and soil development followed the erosional episode (ca. 4500 to 3600 yr B.P.). Mesic-adapted C4panicoid grasses increased during this period of soil development. Low-magnitude fluctuation in the C4-dominated mixed grassland occurred throughout the late Holocene (3600 yr B.P. to present). Rise in δ13C values during the last 1000 yr without corresponding change in phytoliths may indicate a decrease in woodlands caused by increased fire frequency.

Benthic foraminifera and stable isotope data from the last interglaciation (Eemian, substage 5e) from a borehole at Skagen, Denmark, provide evidence for major environmental and hydrographic changes during this period. During the first millennium of the Eemian, water masses covering northern Denmark became gradually warmer. Temperate conditions prevailed during most of the interglaciation, but these were interrupted by two periods with decreased water temperatures. The first cooling (Event S-1) was not very distinct at Skagen, but the second (Event S-2), seen in both the foraminiferal and oxygen isotope record, represents a large shift to subarctic conditions. Carbon isotopes indicate a change in ocean circulation during both events. No comparable climate variations are seen within the Holocene record at the site. The final cooling of the water masses associated with the substage 5e/5d boundary occurred within a few hundred years. These last interglacial climatic changes were probably caused by variations in strength and/or position of the North Atlantic Drift, possibly as a result of varying vigor of the Atlantic conveyor. In addition, minor variations in the fossil assemblages also indicate fluctuations in the inflow of Atlantic water to the Skagerrak–Kattegat area during the warm intervals of substage 5e.

Paleolimnological and archaeological records that span 3500 years from Lake Titicaca and the surrounding Bolivian–Peruvian altiplano demonstrate that the emergence of agriculture (ca. 1500 B.C.) and the collapse of the Tiwanaku civilization (ca. A.D. 1100) coincided with periods of abrupt, profound climate change. The timing and magnitude of climate changes are inferred from stratigraphic evidence of lake-level variation recorded in14C-dated lake-sediment cores. Paleo-lake levels provide estimates of drainage basin water balance. Archaeological evidence establishes spatial and temporal patterns of agricultural field use and abandonment. Prior to 1500 B.C., aridity in the altiplano precluded intensive agriculture. During a wetter period from 1500 B.C. to A.D. 1100, the Tiwanaku civilization and its immediate predecessors developed specialized agricultural methods that stimulated population growth and sustained large human settlements. A prolonged drier period (ca. A.D. 1100–1400) caused declining agricultural production, field abandonment, and cultural collapse.
