Dr Ian Ramsey has made considerable use of the word ‘disclosure’ in what he has to say about religion and in his attempts to give an account of the meaning of religious language. He sometimes (e.g. in Religious Language) speaks of ‘discernment’ or ‘insight’ but ‘disclosure’ is the word he normally favours. In what follows I shall ask: what a disclosure is, to what extent Dr Ramsey's use of the notion leads to confusions, and what questions have to be faced in order to resolve these confusions.

page 131 note 2 Since this article was submitted to the Editor of Religious Studies I have learnt of the untimely death of Ian Ramsey who had been to me both a kind friend and a stimulating tutor. I am heartily sorry that my remarks cannot now evoke the generous but effective reply which was so typical of him. However, since I discussed my arguments with him at an early stage and submitted an outline of the paper to him I have, hesitantly, allowed what I wrote to stand as it was written before his death. I hope that its publication will be regarded as a mark of the very great respect with which I have always regarded him.
