Unos 40.000 saharauis han abandonado su lugar de residencia; actualmente, 20.000 de ellos están cerca de la frontera argelina, mientras que otros 20.000 se han concentrado en Argelia, cerca de Tinduf.

Las condiciones de vida de estas personas desplazadas —niños el 60 por ciento— son trágicas para las que están en el Sahara occidental y malas para las refugiadas en Argelia.
