This book contains 16 papers that were presented at the 28th Carnegie Mellon Symposiumon Cognition in 1997, entitled “Emergentist Approaches to LanguageAcquisition.” Emergentism assumes that linguistic properties arise from the interaction ofgeneral-purpose cognitive processes with environmental data, rather than from prewired,language-specific constraints.
