Ground-based surveys to regularly document the size, shape, and location of weed populations usually are not economically feasible. Digital images of vegetation in semiarid rangeland were obtained from four charge-coupled devices with spectral filters mounted in an airplane. The ability to distinguish yellow starthistle and common St. Johnswort from other rangeland vegetation in images with 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 m spatial resolution was assessed. Detection, positioning, and measurements of size and density of yellow starthistle and common St. Johnswort colonies with densities as low as 30% ground cover were possible at all those resolutions. Images indicated yellow starthistle occupied about one-third of a 180-ha study area. Images taken in June indicated 2 to 10 ha less yellow starthistle ranging from 30 to 100% cover than images taken in July for all resolutions. Images indicated common St. Johnswort occupied less than 4 ha of the 180-ha study area. This procedure provides a method to establish baseline plant community composition and a way to monitor species population changes and dispersal over time.

In 1992 and 1993, rimsulfuron alone at 17, 35, and 70 g ai/ha, and at 35 g/ha plus metribuzin at 280 g ai/ha, respectively, was evaluated PRE and POST for weed control in potato. Rimsulfuron at 35 g/ha PRE and POST controlled common lambsquarters and giant foxtail and when combined with 280 g/ha metribuzin, controlled common ragweed and jimsonweed. Rimsulfuron and rimsulfuron with metribuzin caused slight to moderate chlorosis in new terminal growth of potato but chlorosis disappeared within 3 wk. Potato height, tuber yields, and tuber quality were not affected by rimsulfuron alone or with metribuzin.

Field studies were conducted at Tifton, GA to quantify phytotoxicity of flumetsulam on peanut as influenced by application rate and timing in a weed free experiment. Flumetsulam PPI at rates up to 0.14 kg ai/ha visibly injured peanut and reduced canopy width, but injury from PPI flumetsulam at 0.07 kg/ha or less was no worse than a standard early postemergence (EPOST) treatment of bentazon (0.6 kg ai/ha) plus paraquat (0.14 kg ai/ha). Flumetsulam EPOST at rates up to 0.07 kg/ha visibly injured peanut and reduced peanut canopy width. Flumetsulam injury at rates of 0.035 kg/ha EPOST was similar to that caused by bentazon plus paraquat. Interactive effects of PPI and EPOST flumetsulam reduced early and mid-season pod and foliage biomass more than either application alone. However, peanut recovered with final yields not affected by flumetsulam, regardless of rate or time of application.

Sweet corn tolerance to nicosulfuron as affected by interactions between nicosulfuron applied postemergence (POST), sweet corn hybrid, and rootworm insecticide applied at planting was determined in 1992 and 1993 field experiments. Sweet corn vigor was reduced as nicosulfuron rate increased from 35 to 140 g ai/ha. Sweet corn vigor was reduced 4% more by nicosulfuron with oil emulsifier mixture than nicosulfuron with non-ionic surfactant one week after treatment (WAT). Adjuvant selection did not influence nicosulfuron injury to sweet corn 2 WAT. Nicosulfuron applied postemergence directed (PDIR) caused less sweet corn injury than nicosulfuron applied broadcast POST. ‘Jubilee’ sweet corn was more sensitive to nicosulfuron and insecticide treatments than ‘Excellency’ or ‘Green Giant 40.’ Nicosulfuron reduced sweet corn vigor twice as much when terbufos was applied at planting compared to no insecticide at planting. Neither chlorpyrifos or chlorethoxyfos at planting increased sweet corn injury due to nicosulfuron compared to no insecticide. Excellency and Green Giant 40 yields were not reduced by any treatment. Yields were reduced only when nicosulfuron was applied to Jubilee treated with terbufos. Jubilee yield reduction from nicosulfuron and terbufos was prevented by applying nicosulfuron PDIR.

Field studies were conducted from 1986 through 1989 to determine the feasibility of using clomazone in a winter wheat-corn-fallow rotation. Clomazone at 1.1 kg ai/ha did not control emerged downy brome in autumn nor did it control redroot pigweed and tumble pigweed that emerged after a spring application of paraquat at 0.6 kg ai/ha. However, clomazone plus atrazine at 0.6 plus 2.2 kg ai/ha provided weed control in winter wheat stubble from October to corn harvest 12 mo later. Corn yields from this treatment were equal to or greater than the conventional practice of applying atrazine plus glyphosate at 2.2 plus 0.4 kg ae/ha in the fall followed by a spring application of metolachlor plus dicamba at 2.8 ai plus 0.3 kg ae/ha. When kochia densities were high, clomazone plus atrazine controlled triazine-resistant kochia better than metolachlor plus dicamba. Atrazine at 2.2 kg/ha applied in autumn followed by clomazone at 0.8 kg/ha in April generally caused more corn injury than when the same rate of clomazone was applied in autumn with the atrazine. The percent of bleached corn plants varied with planter, year, time of application, and rate of clomazone applied. The optimum time to apply clomazone at 0.6 kg/ha was in autumn with atrazine. This treatment caused some corn bleaching but produced the highest corn yield over 3 yr. In a dry autumn and spring, less clomazone injury occurred with a planter equipped with row cleaners than those without. The injury pattern associated with planters was inconsistent when precipitation was average and no injury occurred in a wet autumn and spring.

Cultivations in conjunction with POST applications of AC 263,222 were evaluated for their effects on sicklepod and pitted morningglory control and soybean yield. Cultivation alone controlled sicklepod and pitted morningglory season-long no more than 30%. In most instances, one cultivation with herbicides improved sicklepod and pitted morningglory control compared with no cultivation, but two cultivations did not further improve control. Two applications of AC 263,222 at 9 or 13 g ai/ha per application with a single cultivation caused the most soybean injury and were no more efficacious than imazaquin applied PRE followed by 9 g/ha AC 263,222. Imazaquin applied PRE followed by AC 263,222 at 18 g/ha plus one or two cultivations were the only treatments that controlled sicklepod and pitted morningglory more than 90% season-long. Cultivation in combination with herbicides increased yields over that of herbicides used alone. Soybean yield was the highest following imazaquin applied PRE followed by AC 263,222 at 9 g/ha plus two cultivations.

Surfactant concentrations from 0.0008 to 12.5% (w/w) in spray volumes from 19 to 475 L/ha were tested with and without rimsulfuron on giant foxtail. Both factors varied at 5-fold increments so treatments with equal surfactant concentrations and rates could be compared. As surfactant concentration increased from 0.0008 to 0.1%, rimsulfuron activity increased from less than 20% to more than 90% growth inhibition. This increase was dependent on surfactant concentration. As surfactant concentration increased from 0.5 to 12.5%, rimsulfuron activity decreased to less than 20% at all spray volumes. This decreased activity and the associated surfactant phytotoxicity was dependent on surfactant rate, not concentration. Thus rimsulfuron can be much less active when applied with too little or too much surfactant.

Dry edible bean tolerance to PPI-applied EPTC, alachlor and POST-applied imazethapyr was evaluated over two years at Scottsbluff, NE. Eight market classes of dry edible beans comprising 12 cultivars were studied. Crop tolerance was assessed by measuring crop injury, stand, leaf area index, leaf chlorosis, plant canopy volume, projected canopy cover, crop maturity, and seed yield. Leaf area index measured late in the growing season provided the best correlation with seed yield in both years. In 1993 and 1994, imazethapyr treatment caused crop injury, which resulted in a decrease of leaf area and in 1994 decreased seed yield. Differences in herbicide tolerance existed between market classes and cultivars, although the level of herbicide tolerance varied between years.

Field studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of chlorimuron + linuron combinations on soybean growth and yield. PRE applications of chlorimuron + linuron were applied at rates of 0.03 + 0.31, 0.04 + 0.50, 0.05 + 0.62, and 0.10 + 1.24 kg ai/ha. Soybean emergence was not reduced by any herbicide rate. Plant heights were significantly reduced by all rates 5 WAT but the plants recovered from this injury by 19 WAT. Pod production and yield were not reduced by chlorimuron + linuron combinations.

A field experiment was conducted over five years to determine the effect of season-long kochia interference on oat yield and quality. Kochia interference did not affect oat height, test weight, 500-kernel weight, or groat percentage. Similarly, ash, starch, and total β-glucan percentages in oat groat were not affected by kochia interference. Oat grain yield was reduced in 1991 and 1994 by 30 kochia plants/m2, the highest density. Lipid and protein content were not affected by kochia except in 1992 where protein content was reduced and lipid content was increased by kochia.

The efficacy of sulfonylurea herbicides impregnated on granular fertilizers applied PPI or POST was compared to broadcast spray applications for annual broadleaf weed control in winter wheat. Henbit and bushy wallflower were controlled by chlorsulfuron or triasulfuron impregnated onto diammonium phosphate granular fertilizer applied PPI. Efficacy of these herbicides for annual broadleaf weed control was reduced by applying them POST with granular urea fertilizer carrier instead of with water carrier.

Field experiments were conducted to determine whether residual sulfonylurea herbicides applied at cheat suppression rates affect hard red winter wheat forage production and grain yield. Triasulfuron at 30 g/ha or chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron at 26 g/ha applied PRE and metribuzin applied early POST alone at 280 g/ha or tank-mixed with triasulfuron at 158 + 30 g/ha or chlorsulfuron plus metsulfuron at 210 + 21 g/ha, all decreased total forage production of weed-free wheat. Conversely, all herbicide treatments except triasulfuron applied PRE increased wheat grain yield.

In west central Minnesota the extent and duration of weed seed shed was measured for two years in corn that received cultivation but no herbicides. Percentage of seed production represented by viable (filled) seeds was about 79% for green foxtail, 68% for wild mustard, 49% for Pennsylvania smartweed, 48% for common lambsquarters, and 35% for redroot pigweed. Percentage viable seeds varied from 11% in 1993 to 59% in 1994 for redroot pigweed, but was more stable for other species. Seed shed commenced in late August in a cool year (1993) and early August in a warm year (1994). Average growing degree days (base 10 C) from corn planting until 25% seed shed was 983 for common lambsquarters, 984 for wild mustard, 1004 for Pennsylvania smartweed, and 1034 for both green foxtail and redroot pigweed. Brief weather events, such as wind storms, dispersed large percentages of total seed production within a single day. More than one-fifth of all viable seeds of green foxtail, redroot pigweed, and common lambsquarters were retained by the seedheads and dispersed by combines at harvest. In contrast, seeds of early-maturing species, such as wild mustard, were completely dispersed before corn harvest in the warmer year, but one-third of seeds were retained by seedheads at harvest in the cooler year. Measurement of seed shed was compared using five seed trap designs. The preferred design consisted of a 10-cm-diam plastic cup, whose bottom was replaced by a brass screen, and the entire unit attached to a small wooden stake for support. This design provided, on average, the highest estimates of seed production, least among-replication variability, highest correlation with weed population density and aboveground dry-weight, lowest assembly cost, and greatest ease for sample access and seed processing.

Field studies to determine the effect of flame cultivation on cotton pests and beneficial insects were conducted in 1994. Mortality of caged tarnished plant bugs and convergent lady beetles located at the soil surface and canopy heights of 10 and 20 cm above the ground in 25- to 30-cm cotton was recorded after flaming at two liquid propane-gas (LP-gas) pressure settings with or without water-shield protection. Air temperatures, measured proximal to insects during flame treatments, were lower at higher levels in the cotton canopy regardless of LP-gas pressure and the presence or absence of water-shield protection. A mortality of 100% was observed at the soil surface for both insect species in all treatments. Plant bug and lady beetle mortality was lower at the 10- and 20-cm heights relative to soil surface values after flaming at 100 kPa LP-gas pressure. After treatments at 175 kPa, only the mortality of lady beetles at 20 cm above the ground was lower than mortality obtained at the soil surface and 10-cm height. Although flaming induced lady beetle mortality, these beneficial insects were not affected to the same extent as plant bugs at higher canopy levels.

Field experiments were established to evaluate coffee senna control in cotton with registered PRE, early POST-directed (EPD), and late POST-directed (LPD) herbicides and with pyrithiobac applied PRE and early POST. Fluometuron and norflurazon applied PRE controlled coffee senna 87 and 65%, respectively, 6 wk after planting (WAP). Methazole applied EPD controlled coffee senna 96% 2 wk after application, whereas fluometuron and MSMA applied EPD controlled 70 and 16%, respectively. LPD applications of cyanazine, diuron, and prometryn averaged only 45% control 8 WAP. MSMA applied LPD controlled coffee senna only 12%. Fluometuron and norflurazon applied PRE followed by methazole applied EPD and cyanazine applied LPD controlled coffee senna 98 and 99% 6 WAP, respectively. PRE, early POST, and PRE followed by early POST applications of pyrithiobac controlled coffee senna 88, 89, and 95% 6 WAP, respectively. Seed cotton yields were similar to weed-free cotton with all treatments except MSMA applied EPD and the LPD treatments, all of which provided unacceptable (12 to 49%) control 8 WAP.

Three soybean production systems coupled with conventional tillage (CT) or no-tillage (NT) were evaluated for metolachlor and metribuzin loss in water from runoff. Metolachlor and metribuzin concentrations were similar in runoff from CT or NT soybean following winter wheat, with stubble burned, and CT or NT monocrop soybean. However, metolachlor and metribuzin concentrations were higher in runoff water from the CT doublecrop soybean planted into winter wheat stubble than NT. In all 3 yr of the study, the majority of total losses occurred in the first three runoff events. Total loss of metolachlor in runoff from the doublecrop system with winter wheat stubble present was 0.6% in 1991 to 1.1% in 1990 from CT, and 0.2% in 1990 to 0.6% in 1991 from the NT. Similar results were observed from the CT and NT doublecrop with burned winter wheat stubble and the monocrop systems. Metribuzin loss patterns were similar to metolachlor, but the fraction lost was slightly higher. Multi-variate regression was used to describe and predict herbicide losses, and R2values ranged from 0.66 to 0.98 for both metolachlor and metribuzin.

Two biotypes of field bindweed differing in their susceptibility to glyphosate were used to determine if diluent or carrier volume and additional surfactant could overcome differences in intraspecific response to glyphosate. In greenhouse studies, glyphosate (formulated product) was applied at 1.68 kg/ha in three diluent volumes (142, 189, and 237 L/ha), with and without 1 % (v/v) additional amphoteric surfactant. Nonparametric and ordinal categorical analyses indicated that field bindweed biotype, diluent volume, and surfactant significantly increased glyphosate phytotoxicity 7 DAT. Only biotype and volume were significant 21 DAT. The tolerant biotype was less injured at the 189 and 237 L/ha volumes than the susceptible biotype. Field bindweed injury was similar at a diluent volume of 142 L/ha for both biotypes. These greenhouse studies suggest that control of field bindweed may be improved with glyphosate by using low spray volume in concert with additional surfactant.

Triazine-resistant (TR) common waterhemp was reported and confirmed in Fillmore County, NE in 1990. A survey of 81 fields was conducted to characterize the occurrence of common waterhemp and grower practices. Sampled fields fell into three categories: suspected by growers to contain resistant plants (26 fields), randomly selected (28 fields), and adjacent to fields containing TR common waterhemp (27 fields). Resistant plants were found in 64% of all fields. Resistance was confirmed in 92% of the fields suspected by growers to contain resistant plants. Adjacent fields were no more likely to contain resistant plants than randomly chosen fields. Crop rotation did not significantly affect occurrence of resistance. Resistance was associated with the grower, indicating movement of resistant seed between fields via equipment. Atrazine, bromoxynil plus atrazine, and bentazon plus atrazine provided less than 75% postemergence control of TR common waterhemp, while primisulfuron, dicamba plus atrazine, primisulfuron plus dicamba, dicamba, 2,4-D ester, and metribuzin plus bentazon gave over 85% control.
