Summary

Past interventions have focused on reducing body dissatisfaction, yet few have examined ways to help individuals move beyond merely ‘settling’ for their body and towards actively embracing it. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of the current literature on positive body image. We then review previously tested individual-level strategies (e.g., strategies that individuals can implement on their own) aimed at enhancing positive body image. Three main categories of strategies are discussed: writing-based strategies, exercise-based strategies, and online tools designed to increase positive body image. We then provide an overview of the correlates of positive body image and provide suggestions for future individual-level positive body image enhancement strategies that draw upon these correlates. Finally, we present a number of general recommendations regarding potential individual-level strategies aimed at both decreasing body dissatisfaction and enhancing positive body image.
