The Canadian Association of Neuropathologists (CANP) held their 56th Annual Meeting at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario from September 28th to October 1st, 2016 under the leadership of Dr. Marc Del Bigio, President. Dr Rob Hammond handled the local arrangements. The annual banquet was held at Peller Estates.
The academic program of 19 scientific presentations and 9 unknown case submissions was assembled by CANP Secretary/Treasurer Dr. Peter Gould into four sessions, chaired by Drs. Sidney Croul (Tumours), Lili-Naz Hazrati (Neurodegeneration), Lee-Cyn Ang (White Matter Disease) and Rob Hammond (Pediatrics and Muscle).
All unknown cases were available for viewing online prior to the meeting, thanks to CANP webmaster Dr. Jason Karamchandani. All abstracts for scientific presentation were peer reviewed by the Program Committee composed of Drs. Harvey Sarnat, Marie-Christien Guiot and David Munoz.
The Jerzy Olszewski Guest Lecture was given by Dr. Adrian Owen, Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Cognitive Neuroscience and Imaging, University of Western Ontario, Canada, on the subject of “When Thoughts Become Actions - Imaging in Disorders of Consciousness.”
Dr. David N. Louis from the Massachusetts General Hospital gave a Special Lecture on “The 2016 WHO Classification of CNS Tumors: an Overview and a Practical Approach.”
The 2016 symposium, chaired by Dr. Del Bigio, was devoted to Brain Tumours.
Dr Ken Aldape from the University Of Toronto gave the David Robertson Guest Lecture on the subject of “Molecular diagnosis of brain tumors.”
Dr Stephen Yip from the University Of British Columbia spoke on the subject of “How advances in genomic medicine are transforming diagnostic neuropathology.”
Prof. Dominique Figarella-Branger from the Hôpital de la Timone, Marseille, France explained “POLA, TUCERA and RENOP : the French clinico-pathological connection.”
Dr Cynthia Hawkins from the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto gave the Gordon Mathieson Invited Member Lecture for 2016 on the subject of “Pediatric brain tumours – The WHO 2016 and beyond.”
The Resident Awards Committee was made up of Drs. Claire Coiré, Alex Easton and Stéphan Saikali.
The Mary Tom Award for the best clinical paper was given to Dr. Kristopher Langdon (supervisor Dr. Hammond) for his presentation “A10: Adult-onset progressive dementia and myoclonic epilepsy with polyglucosan bodies.”
The Morrison H. Finlayson Award for best basic science paper was given to Derek Wong (supervisor Dr. Yip) for his presentation “A1: Investigations of the functional interactions between CIC and ATXN1L in Oligodendroglioma.”
