This is an interesting book ideal for a young person interested in mythology. It contains a selection of chapters, each focusing on a different story, starting with the creation of the gods and ending with the Odyssey. It has sections with ‘fun facts’ linking to Marvel or modern names and line drawings and pictures to illustrate different characters. Each chapter contains an activity, such as matching, simple questions, and fill in the gaps, and answers are provided, so one can work independently. The overview of the gods and description of the Titans is more detailed than in most books on mythology, and the stories are well told and easy to read. It would be helpful for a General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) pupil struggling with the stories, as it contains Hercules and the 12 labours, Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts, and the Trojan War. It also has a section on the Odyssey.

However, as a school resource, it is quite limited for the price point and would be difficult to photocopy and use with a whole class. The images are useful but quite simplistic and easily available on Google. This would be a useful purchase to lend out for one really enthusiastic younger pupil or an older one struggling with the content but is more difficult to use on a larger scale. It is worth purchasing for use out of school, for one’s own child or relative who has a particular interest in the subject and can work through independently.
