A Mosaic of Yorùbá Ontology and Materiality of Pleasure Since AD 1000

Abstract

What have been the meanings and meaningfulness of pleasure in Yorùbá thought, practice, and history over the past eight hundred years? Ogundiran draws from literary, archaeological, myth-historical, and ethnographic sources to answer this question in two parts. First, he examines the ontologies, materiality, and sociality of pleasure at the levels of ordinary experience and institutional culture. Second, he demonstrates how pleasurable experiences and things were used to construct social order, define social difference, and build community. Ogundiran concludes that pleasure is not an autonomous experience. Rather, it is embedded in other domains of social life.

Quelles ont été les significations et le sens du plaisir dans la pensée, la pratique et l’histoire de Yorùbá au cours des huit cents dernières années ? Ogundiran puise dans des sources littéraires, archéologiques, mythiques et ethnographiques pour répondre à cette question en deux parties. Tout d’abord, il examine les ontologies, la matérialité et la socialité du plaisir aux niveaux de l’expérience ordinaire et de la culture institutionnelle. Deuxièmement, il démontre comment des expériences et des choses agréables ont été utilisées pour construire l’ordre social, définir la différence sociale et construire une communauté. Ogundiran conclut que le plaisir n’est pas une expérience autonome. Mais qu’il est plutôt ancré dans d’autres domaines de la vie sociale.

Ao longo dos últimos 800 anos, que significados e que propósitos tem o prazer assumido no pensamento, nas práticas e na história iorubás? Com base em fontes literárias, arqueológicas, míticas e etnográficas, Ogundiran procura responder a esta questão em duas partes. Em primeiro lugar, analisa as ontologias, a materialidade e a sociabilidade do prazer nos planos da experiência comum e da cultura institucional. Em segundo lugar, demonstra que as experiências e as coisas prazerosas foram utilizadas para construir a ordem social, para definir as diferenças sociais e para desenvolver as comunidades. Ogundiran conclui que o prazer não é uma experiência autónoma. Pelo contrário, o prazer insere-se noutros domínios da vida social.
