Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry in the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University, UK. He studied medicine at the University of Glasgow, UK, and then trained in psychiatry in London, UK. He moved to Newcastle in 1984 and in 1990 was appointed Professor of Psychiatry at Newcastle University, UK. He specialised in studying the causes and treatment of severe mood disorders. In 2016, following his retirement, he embarked on a part time PhD in the history of medicine, graduating in 2023. The subject of study was mortality in Victorian asylums.
