Crassostrea gigas larvae were collected in the bay of Arcachon in July 1985, 1986 and 1987. Larval samples were collected daily at high tide, during at least the first 12 days of pelagic life and every hour during 1 day and night cycle, 6 days after spawning. Epifluorescence microscopy was used for detecting ingestion and digestion of nanoplankton and thin sections were made to try to determine the algal species ingested. The first algal uptake occurred 48 hours after fertilization. and different stages or digestion were noted from the 3rd day. No relationship between ingestion or digestion and the age of the veligers was observed. There was no difference in the feeding activity during day and night. Because the nutrition index was high (70%) the feeding behaviour of the larvae was apparently normal. Nevertheless the intensity of algal uptake was weak. The presence of diatoms in the digestive tract suggests that the Bacillariophyceae play a significant role in the nutrition of veligers in nature.

In order to highlight the main factors accounting for the growth of clams in Marennes-Oléron Bay, three locations were investigated in 1984-85. First, factor analysis provided information on fluctuations of the environment. Second, principal components analysis was used to study ecological phenomena. The main axes explained the growth rate, which was included in an allometric model. Its properties were then studied by means of sensitivity analysis.

On the basis of hydrological and biological data collected between 1983 and 1987 along the French coast, and especially in the southern approaches to Brittany. it has been possible to compare different parameters in an attempt to explain the seasonal variations of a toxic dinoflagellate: Dinophysis sp. speveral species were identified and their seasonal distribution patterns are described. The origin of the blooms, from either coastal endemic or offshore populations, is considered

Les deux espèces de sardinelles (Surdinella aurita et Sardinella maderensis) sont présentes dans les trois régions d'upwelling de l'Ouest africain (zones sénégalo-mauritanienne, ivoiro-ghanéenne et congoangolaise). La compétition entre ces deux espèces, présentant une grande similitude de forme, à l'activité et aux régimes alimentaires très proches et occupant les mêmes zones géographiques semble effective. Cependant les stratégies d'occupation et d'exploitation du milieu, de croissance et de reproduction sont, pour ces deux espèces, intimement liées à la dynamique des upwellings mais elles divergent en de nombreux points. Une complémentarité spatio-temporelle semble donc exister entre la dynamique de ces deux espèces dont les stratégies démographiques diffèrent. Sardinella aurita présente une plasticité et une adaptabilité remarquable aux fluctuations du milieu dont elle tire parti. En cela, elle semble être plus sensible aux variations climatiques que Sardinella maderensis, espèce tolérant de fortes perturbations de I'environnement. Sardinella aurita possède une stratégie adaptative plus souple liée à une grande plasticité démographique. Cela lui permet une meilleure utilisation d'un accroissement d'enrichissement temporaire du milieu, mais en retour la population subit le contrecoup de façon plus drastique lorsque les conditions deviennent défavorables.

Même si la compétition entre deux espèces de poissons pélagiques peut souvent paraître effective en écologie marine, rares sont les exemples où elle peut être mise en évidence au niveau de l'abondance respective des stocks. Les mécanismes de la compétition pour des espèces spécialisées comme les pélagiques doivent être précisés au niveau de certains paramètres du cycle vital de l'espèce. L'analyse comparée des stratégies démographiques permet de mieux comprendre la nature différente de la dynamique des stocks, notamment l'organisation du partage de ressources communes. La nécessité de gérer les stocks en considérant la stratégie de vie des espèces qui les composent est soulignée.

Afin d'améliorer la formulation des aliments composés destinés à la croissance de Penaeus rannamei, nous avons étudié l'effet de l'incorporation de farine de soja et de farine de poisson sur la croissance, la survie, les caractéristiques de l'hépatopancréas et les enzymes de cette espèce. Quatre concentrations de farine de soja (5, 10, 20, 40 %), quatre concentrations de farine de poisson (0, 5, 15, 30 %) deux formes de farine de soja et trois farines de poissons différentes suivant leur origine géographique ont été successivement testées. La nourriture (10 % du poids initial) a été distribuée deux fois par jour (8-9 h et 19 h). Les rapports hépatosomatiques, les protéines, les protéases, les amylases et la trypsine ont été déterminés sur neuf individus par traitement. Les résultats montrent qu'une forte incorporation de farine de soja ou de farine de poisson a pour effet de diminuer la croissance des animaux. Cette diminution est liée à une baisse de l'ingestibilité des aliments. Les enzymes digestives ne sont pas affectées. Les résultats montrent par ailleurs que l'origine géographique d'une source de poisson et le traitement subi par la farine de soja et la farine de poisson d'autre part, n'affectent pas les performances zootechniques et les enzymes digestives. L'ensemble des résultats permet de conclure que l'incorporation de soja ou de farine de poisson dans l'aliment doit être réalisée à faible taux, et ce, uniquement dans le but de diversifier les sources de protéines.

The early debate concerning the existence of several self-sustaining populations within the distributional limits of marine species centered on Atlantic herring in the northeastern Atlantic. Fr. Heincke convincingly resolved the controversy by extensive sampling of herring and sprat for the analysis of a large number of meristic and morphometric characters, and the development of new statistical methodology (including rudimentary multivariate statistics). He initially analysed the morphological variability at different parts of the life cycle of spring – and autumn – spawning herring aggregations off Kiel. This detailed study was accompanied by somewhat less-detailed sampling of herring and sprat from other locations in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Norwegian coastal waters. Heincke argued that a fundamental shift in both the species concept and the mechanism of speciation was required to account for the emerging empirical observations on marine fish. His observations and conclusions on the nature of geographic variability of fish species, even though revolutionary, were accepted rapidly. The influence of his studies on fisheries research, systematics, and evolutionary biology are evaluated. In addition, the contributions of J. Schmidt and J. Hjort to population thinking are briefly addressed. It is concluded that the studies by Heincke on herring populations, as well as having a major impact on subsequent developments in fisheries biology and management (in essence the definition of management units based on geographic populations or population complexes), also had an important impact on the biometricians (Weldon, Pearson) and the development of the evolutionary synthesis in the 1920s and 1930s (through Chetverikov, Dobzhansky, and Goldschmidt). Observations on geographic patterns in populations from terrestrial systems could be generalized to the oceans on the basis of Heincke's quantitative studies on herring and sprat (and the follow-up work on other fish species).

These early investigations on the very existence of marine populations by Heincke, Hjort and Schmidt are still pertinent to recruitment research and the studies underlying the definition of management units. An historical perspective may contribute to the resolution of present topical issues involving the regulation of populations.
