Deep Listening: Podcast Audiences and Affective Resonance in Urban Ghana

Abstract

Podcasting, with its focus on voices, remains a compelling topic for African studies research, which has historically put orality at the center of the field. Recognizing sparse audience inclusion in existing research on African podcasting, the authors conducted focus groups with listeners in urban Ghana to document consumption practices and attitudes toward this form of new orality. Using the concept “deep listening” drawn from participant comments, the researchers theorize that listeners and producers experience a form of sound-mediated, affective resonance from podcasts that utilize audience collaboration and local sonic aesthetics, linking the affordances of openness and freedom to the medium.

Le podcasting, qui met en avant les voix, demeure un sujet captivant pour la recherche en études africaines, laquelle a historiquement positionné l’oralité au cœur de ce domaine. Considérant le faible taux d’inclusion du public dans les recherches antérieures sur le podcasting en Afrique, les auteurs ont pris l’initiative d’organiser des groupes de discussion avec des auditeurs situés dans les zones urbaines du Ghana, dans le but de documenter les pratiques de consommation ainsi que les attitudes envers cette forme de nouvelle oralité. En s’appuyant sur le concept d’« écoute profonde » évoqué par les commentaires des participants, les chercheurs avancent que les auditeurs ainsi que les producteurs éprouvent une forme de résonance affective, médiatisée par le son, à partir de podcasts qui intègrent la collaboration du public et l’esthétique sonore locale. Cela établit un lien entre les possibilités d’ouverture et de liberté inhérentes à ce média.

A produção de podcasts, com o seu enfoque nas vozes, continua a ser um tema interessante para a investigação em estudos africanos, que historicamente tem colocado a oralidade no centro da sua atividade. Reconhecendo a escassa inclusão do público na investigação que se tem feito sobre a produção africana de podcasts, os autores do presente artigo organizaram grupos de discussão com ouvintes residentes em cidades do Gana, com vista a documentar as práticas de consumo e as atitudes em relação a esta nova forma de oralidade. Utilizando o conceito de “escuta profunda” – nascido da análise dos comentários dos participantes –, os investigadores desenvolveram uma teoria segundo a qual os ouvintes e os produtores, através dos podcasts que recorrem à participação do público e à estética sonora local, experimentam uma espécie de ressonância afetiva mediada pelo som, assim associando as possibilidades de abertura e liberdade a este meio de comunicação.
