Academic journals play a key role in the dissemination of scholarlyknowledge in the social sciences. Hence, publication in journals iscritical evidence of scholarly performance for both individuals andthe departments that they populate. While in the best of worlds eachscholar's performance would be evaluated based on a close reading ofhis/her published journal articles, in the actual practices ofhiring, tenure and promotion review, and departmental evaluationsthis ideal is often honored only in the breach. Instead, evaluatorscommonly base their judgments of the importance and quality ofpublished articles, at least in part, on the journals in which theyappear. The higher the status accorded a journal, the greater theweight attached to publications appearing in it.
