The beginning of 2013 seems an appropriate moment, as usual, to mention some items of news and to present some recent figures in order to analyze the current situation of the Journal. Firstly, as announced at the meeting of the editorial board in Stellenbosch on the 12th July, 2012, there are some changes affecting this team: in addition to the incorporation of Willian R. Summerhill in late 2011 to replace Alan Dye, Adolfo Meisel also joined the editorial team in mid 2012 to substitute Luis Bértola. Finally, at the beginning of 2013 Antonio Tena-Junguito stood down as Chief Editor of the Journal to be replaced by Blanca Sánchez Alonso. The members of the Editorial Board and the Board of Trustees thanked those leaving the editorial team for their work during this last period and welcomed the new team warmly.
In June 2012 our second impact factor was published by JCR and, while our figures are still modest, we have increased significantly from 0.17 in 2010 to 0.25 in 2011 (an increase of 45%).
The RHE-JILAEH received 23, 30, 41, 46, 57, 44 and 43 original research papers in the years from 2006 to 2012 respectively. Both the increase experienced in the early years and the degree of internationalization have stabilized.
INSTITUTIONS SUBMITTING ARTICLES TO RHE-JILAEH
In 2009 the number of authors submitting papers from non-Spanish institutions exceeded those from Spanish institutions. This trend seems to have reversed in recent years.

Latin American institutions (almost 100 articles), followed by European (40) and North American institutions (23), provide most of the research papers received by our Journal.
The pie chart in Figure 3 shows the range of Latin American countries to submit articles. This chart also reflects, to a certain extent, the degree of academic openness in these countries. As with international trade, smaller countries tend to be more open than larger ones but other factors also play a part. The numbers for Mexico and Brazil are very low taking their size into consideration, while the figures for Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay are higher than expected.

We would like to mention the following points as far as changes in the Journal's statistics in 2012 in comparison with earlier years are concerned. The percentage distribution of articles received and their classification by topic has hardly changed; half the papers address global and Latin American issues while the other half focus on Iberian topics. It is true, however, that 2012 saw a slight increase in interest in global issues. Our rejection rate of around 70% also experienced little change in 2012 if we calculate an average of ‘active’ articles and those received. Evaluation times, as noted in previous editorial notes, are closely related with the percentage of rejections. Editorial rejections reduce evaluation times and the fact that the former have decreased slightly would partly explain the small increase in evaluation times. This can also help explain the slight rise in the number of articles whose evaluation time exceeded four months. However, as can be seen, this was only the case for the total number of articles received while the corresponding percentage for ‘active’ articles fell slightly compared with 2011.
We would like to conclude by expressing our gratitude to our team of referees for their work through 2012. Their contribution is vital as we strive to improve the quality of the articles we publish. We are well aware that much of the success of this publication is the result of the professionalism and academic loyalty of the long list of international referees who work with us and whose names follow:

Como es habitual, al comienzo del año 2013 dedicamos una pequeña reflexión a las novedades y los datos recientes que permiten analizar la situación actual de la Revista. En este sentido, recordamos, como ya se anunció en la reunión del Consejo editorial en Stellenbosch el 12 de julio del 2012, las novedades de la Revista en relación al equipo editorial: a la incorporación de William R. Summerhill a finales del 2011, en sustitución de Alan Dye, se sumó a mediados del 2012 Adolfo Meisel en sustitución de Luis Bértola. Por último a primeros de enero del 2013, nos dejó Antonio Tena-Junguito y toma las riendas como Directora Responsable de la Revista Blanca Sánchez Alonso. Los miembros del Consejo Editorial y del Patronato de la Revista agradecieron los servicios prestados durante todos estos años a los editores salientes y dieron la bienvenida y buenos augurios al equipo entrante.
En junio del año 2012 se publicó nuestro segundo factor de impacto en JCR y aunque nuestros números son todavía modestos lo hemos incrementado de forma relevante al pasar de 0.17 en 2010 a 0.25 en 2011 (45% de incremento).
La recepción de originales de investigación recibidos por RHE-JILAEH ha sido de 23, 30, 41, 46, 57, 44 y 43, respectivamente entre los años 2006 y 2012. El crecimiento inicial de la llegada de artículos parece haberse estabilizado en los últimos años así como su internacionalización.
Los autores que han enviado artículos desde instituciones no españolas superaron en número a los españoles en el año 2009, pero la situación parece haberse revertido en los últimos años.
Las instituciones latinoamericanas con casi 100 artículos, seguidas por las instituciones europeas con 40 y las norteamericanas con 23, son los principales suministradores de originales de investigación de nuestra Revista.
El Gráfico 3 muestra la diversidad nacional de los artículos llegados de Latinoamérica. Estos números muestran en parte el coeficiente de apertura académica de cada uno de estos países. Los países pequeños, como ocurre con el comercio internacional, tienden a ser más abiertos que los grandes, pero también cuentan otros factores. México y Brasil tienen números muy bajos en relación a su tamaño, mientras Argentina, Colombia y Uruguay los tienen superiores a lo esperado.
En relación a las novedades que ofrecen nuestras estadísticas para el año 2012 respecto a años anteriores, se podrían comentar brevemente los siguientes aspectos. Los porcentajes de los artículos recibidos en relación a la clasificación por temas se mantienen a niveles parecidos respecto a los años anteriores; la mitad hacen referencia a temas globales y latinoamericanos y la otra mitad a temas ibéricos aunque quizás en el año 2012 se puede observar un pequeño repunte de los temas globales. Lo mismo podemos decir en relación a nuestra tasa de rechazo que se sitúa, haciendo una media entre los artículos en activo y los recibidos en el año 2012 alrededor del 70%. Los tiempos de evaluación, como hemos comentado en notas anteriores, están muy relacionados con el porcentaje de los rechazos editoriales. Los rechazos editoriales reducen los tiempos, y dado que estos últimos han bajado ligeramente esto explicaría en parte el ligero incremento de los tiempos en los artículos en proceso de evaluación. En este sentido, también se puede explicar el leve repunte de los artículos cuya evaluación ha superado los 4 meses, pero como se puede observar esto solo ocurriría en relación a los artículos recibidos mientras que en los activos este porcentaje bajaría respecto al año 2011.
No queremos terminar sin agradecer a nuestros evaluadores su labor a lo largo del año 2012. Su contribución es fundamental para mejorar la calidad de los artículos de la Revista. Somos conscientes de que una parte importante del éxito de esta publicación se la debemos a la profesionalidad y lealtad académica de nuestro amplio plantel de evaluadores internacionales cuyos nombres publicamos a continuación.
