Last year, Carolyn Moehling of Rutgers University took over from Eric Hilt as the co-editor for submissions on the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Bishnupriya Gupta is now in her fourth year as co-editor for Eurasian submissions. Matthew Jaremski is the book review editor for the Americas, and Juan Flores Zendejas is the book review editor for the rest of the world. The Journal is fortunate in to have Lily Welch as the Journal’s Assistant Editor and Sally Sztrecska as the Production Editor.
The Journal has benefited greatly from the expert guidance and advice of our Editorial Board and more than 400 referees who contributed their time and expertise to maintain and enhance the Journal’s quality. The Editorial Board of the Journal consists of 18 members. The members typically serve three-year terms. Those departing from the Board this year are Sascha Becker, Katherine Eriksson, Greg Niemesh, and Sheilagh Ogilvie. We thank them for their contributions. We have four new board members replacing them: Sebastian Braun (University of Bayreuth), Romola Davenport (Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure), Rowena Gray (University of California, Merced), and Taylor Jaworski (University of Colorado). The editorial office is grateful to all who have worked on behalf of the Journal over the past year. We also recognize and appreciate the contributions of many scholars to the Journal’s book reviews.
Over the past five years, the Journal’s impact factor, which is a measure of the frequency with which its articles are cited, has remained at 3.1. Table 1 displays the data. This is a reflection of the quality of the articles published in the Journal, and may also reflect growing scholarly interest in the field of economic history.
The number of new submissions to the Journal in recent years is shown in Table 2. From 2013–14 to 2017–18, the average number of submissions per year was approximately 160, but there was a noticeable jump in the number of submissions to 195 in 2018–19, 209, and 206 in 2019–20 and 2020–21. This year the submissions were 198 compared to 201 from last year. There has been a general rise in the number of submissions on Asia over the last few years. However, Western Europe recorded the biggest increase in submissions last year. The Journal published 31 articles in total in 2024–25, not counting the presidential address by Douglas Irwin.
The publication ratio displayed in Table 2 is the number of refereed papers and notes published in the current year divided by the number of new manuscripts submitted in the previous year. In 2023–24, the publication ratio is 0.15, well within the range seen since 2015–16. The quality of the accepted papers remains high.
Table 3 reports the response-time statistics for the corresponding submissions. To place the numbers in context, our goal is to have a decision back to the author within 90 days. Response times for all submissions, as well as for new submissions this year, in comparison to last year, have risen. In 2023–24, the median response time for all submissions (including revised manuscripts) was 53 days, and for new submissions, the median response time was 64 days. This year’s numbers are 72 and 81, respectively. We need to keep an eye on this and make sure reminders reach the referees. We make every effort to handle submissions efficiently, taking into consideration that we are primarily focused on the quality of editorial decisions, rather than their speed.
The distributions of submissions are documented in subsequent tables. We show the data for eras in Table 4 and for topics in Table 5. The data on regions is shown in Table 6. These tables present data for 2018–2019 to 2024–2025.
The Journal’s coverage remains broad. Table 4 shows that the distribution of submissions over eras has been fairly steady in recent years, with the nineteenth and twentieth centuries accounting for the bulk of submissions. Table 5 shows that submissions in political economy have been particularly strong. Labor, growth, and demography are other important topics. Table 6 shows that this year, submissions from Western Europe account for 26 percent of all submissions. The regions of North America (United States and Canada) and Asia, excluding the Middle East, are the two other large components of total submissions.
Book reviews are an important component of the Journal, and we sincerely thank the many reviewers. We also remind our membership to have their press send a copy of any new books to the relevant book review editor. In recent years, the Journal has also sought occasional “reviews and reflections” based articles and extended book reviews, when appropriate. In 2024–25, the Journal did not publish a “reviews and reflections” article.
Manuscript Central (editorial system) has undergone some changes. We thank Kerry Boyles and the staff of Cambridge University Press for their support in helping us through the process. We have returned to announcing published papers for each issue on EH.Net, which we hope will increase the visibility of the papers.
In the 2013 meetings, the EHA board of trustees approved a policy to make publication conditional on archiving the data sufficient to replicate the results in accepted articles. The authors of all new submissions from 1 January 2016 onward that were accepted for publication have been required to post data and replication files to maintain and advance the Journal’s efforts to ensure transparency and scholarly integrity. Replication files for Online Appendices/supplement materials must also be included since these results usually offer additional support for the conclusions of the article.
A branded page can be found with openICPSR, and depositors can submit files to openICPSR per the instructions available at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/files/openICPSR/JEH-deposit-instructions.pdf. The editorial office and ICPSR continue to work to enhance the interface.
Table 1 JOURNAL IMPACT FACTOR

The impact factor is calculated as the number of citations to the Journal within a given year of papers published in the previous five years divided by the number of “citable items” from the previous five years.
Table 2 SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION RATES

The “published” count includes refereed articles and notes. It does not include the presidential address, which is published in June, nor “reviews and reflections” articles.
