An error occurs in the discussion of Jewish participation in Unitarian Institutions in Manchester during the mid-nineteenth century.

The article incorrectly states that ‘the significant Jewish population was largely integrated into the lower-middle-class Protestant community’ (p.17). This statement was based on a misinterpretation of secondary material. There is limited historical evidence for any such integration. In fact, as Bill Williams (Reference Williams1985) has shown, the Jewish population of Manchester in 1851 was small — around 1,092 individuals — and there is no evidence of any Jewish presence within Unitarian institutions. John Seed’s article (Reference Seed1982) which was cited in the author’s article relates solely to a small number of Jewish converts to Unitarianism.

The correction does not affect the broader arguments of the article regarding class segregation, but it substantially revises the specific claim about Jewish-Unitarian integration.
