Summary

When Ezra appeared on the podium before the assembly in Jerusalem, it was, according to the biblical narrative, almost a thousand years after Moses had ascended Mount Sinai to receive the Torah. The nation first had to take possession of the Promised Land, and then lose it, and finally return to it and attempt to build a new society under very different circumstances, before the words of that Torah could come to life. Without loss, there is little learning.
