Index
In this index, “officials” are considered to be elected officials. First-time candidates are indicated as such under specific groups of officials. The main demographic groups – American Indians, Asian Americans, Blacks, Latinos/as, and Whites – are divided into sections corresponding to officials (men and women) and to general populations of men and women. There are also sections dedicated to men of color and women of color, both as officials and as general populations.
“Latinos/as” is used when Hispanic/Latino men and women are combined in discussions of specific topics. This corresponds to a generic classification “Latino” in the text. Otherwise, specific gender is indicated by “Latinos,” “Latina” or “Latinas,” “Latino officials,” and “Latina officials.” There is a separate heading for Hispanics. Although African American is often used interchangeably with Black, for the sake of consistency, we use Black (rather than black or African American).
Figures, tables, boxes, and maps are indicated in italics by f, t, b, and m, respectively.
