Summary

The ultimate goal of this book is to provide guidance to lawmakers, policymakers and scholars interested in supporting collaborative capitalism in the United States. More broadly, the goal is to provide a range of practical measures that can be taken to increase economic stability for workers and businesses in the urban core. The book thus concludes by offering specific suggestions for law reform measures that could be adopted at the local, state, and national levels to support collaborative business networks. Chapter 9 begins by considering regulatory approaches in other settings where more cooperative forms of capitalism are the norm. Specifically, the chapter provides a detailed description of Germany’s system of market regulation. In doing so, it aims to open a conceptual space for developing one or more intermediate paths for urban American workers between being hired by large businesses that are minimally invested in such workers and starting up their own independent businesses.
