Of the ten films directed by Robbe-Grillet, three of them have had oriental settings: Istanbul for L'Immortelle, Djerba for L'Eden et après and Marrakesh for C'est Gradiva qui vous appelle. The pretext for such settings, therefore, is the eroticism that for Robbe-Grillet pervades. Focusing on the two films in which these effects are most pronounced, his first, L'Immortelle and his last, C'est Gradiva qui vous appelle, this chapter interrogates the validity of Robbe-Grillet's claims. Robbe-Grillet's use of erotic imagery in the context of Gothic and orientalist works is complex: ironic to some unmeasurable degree but equally, and perhaps more obviously visceral. L'Immortelle, in which the fetishistic and the sadomasochistic have a more muted presence, is superior to Gradiva in this respect, the horrors of explicit representation subordinated to a more complex psychosexual exploration.
