This chapter presents an overview of the life and work of Humphry Davy, one of the most prominent scientists of the nineteenth century. Davy’s numerous scientific accomplishments mean that today he is seen by many as one of the founders of modern chemistry, but as is explored in this chapter his talent for poetry was also appreciated and championed by luminaries such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. This chapter explores how Coleridge, Wordsworth, and other poets from the Romantic movement were greatly inspired by the new future vision of humanity that Davy presented, one that benefited from, rather than was torn apart by, science.
