Various factors, including the move of the mafia into legitimate business and financial activities, the killing of such prominent opponents as Falcone and Borsellino, the arrest of mafia bosses like Toto Riina, the ousting of a mafia old guard, the willingness of increasing numbers of mafiosi to collaborate and the rise to power of new political forces in Sicily and Italy, have made the future direction of the mafia more uncertain than ever before. There is no consensus over the analysis of the current situation, nor over the measures to be adopted.
