Brahms originally wrote these for piano duet, in four books:
Heft 1 Nos. 1–5 and Heft 2 Nos. 6–10 (1854–68) were published by Simrock, Berlin in 1869
Heft 3 Nos. 11–16 and Heft 4 Nos. 17–21 (1880) were published by Simrock in 1880
The very best and most well-known ones are Nos. 1, 5 and 6; also good are Nos. 2, 3 and perhaps 20.
Nos. 1, 3 and 10 were orchestrated by Brahms, and published (with rehearsal letters) by Simrock; the Breitkopf & Härtel reprint (which adds bar numbers) is virtually identical, with only the tiniest textual differences of which the most important is in No.1:
1C, 1D Vl 1: slur n.2–4 in Simrock, but B & H alters to slur n.2–3, n.4 stacc. Doubtless the reason for this is that in 1F, 1I Simrock has Picc, Vl 1 slur n.2–3 (to which B & H adds n.4 stacc.)
