McCulloch (ed.), Early English Tracts on Commerce, p. 303)As we have seen in chapter three, the profound cause of the crisis in Languedoc's industrial production was the unfavourable demand situation occasioned by a combination of factors: the general European depression, geographical shifts in Europe's commercial circuits and aggravations of the effects of the European depression occasioned by both France's involvement in foreign warfare and her domestic social and political problems. Commercial and technical backwardness had developed as a consequence of the unfavourable demand situation.
