By 1709, the College recognised the need to act decisively if it was to acquire the new library that was so urgently needed. Progress turned out to be far from smooth, however, and eventual success required considerable political agility on the part of those behind the scheme. Trinity had supported the Williamite settlement, but some of its members were still far from wedded to the new regime and continued to display distinct Jacobite and Tory sympathies. The involvement of students in the daubing of King William's statue on College Green was not uncommon, and in 1708 a Scottish student named Edward Forbes, who was due to receive his MA degree the following day, refused to drink a toast to the ‘glorious, pious and immortal memory’ of King William and compared him unfavourably to a recently hanged highwayman. This was too much for the College authorities and on this occasion they took firmer action than hitherto by expelling Forbes and depriving him of his degree.
Though the Forbes case was a trivial issue in itself, the way the College had handled it was cited the following year as an indication of its loyalty when the Irish House of Commons petitioned Queen Anne for a grant of £5,000 for the new Library.
