from THE TOWN
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 02 August 2019
They came by sea.
Innumerable like the surfs they came,
Dressed in sea-green robes
And cloaks of frothy white lace.
They came and went, and yet more came,
By night they came
On their fateful journey nowhere,
Weaving eternal patterns on the golden sand.
By land they came, the living dead,
To tidal threshold of new life.
I heard mysterious voices
Beyond my mother's heaving breath,
Beyond the wind's gentle tread
On the depth of night.
Until at cockcrow, Nature sang,
And Dawn beckoned me enchantingly
With dew bejewelled hands.
