from Alice Milligan (1866–1908–1953)
The sea within the caves is roaring loud
Far, far, below the jagged ridges, where
The wind waves of the ocean of blue air
Are broken into falling foam of cloud,
That drifts and tosses on the summit proud,
And rolls o'er slopes of heath or moorland bare,
By this soft sky of summer overbowed.
The tumult of the ocean mounts not there,
Save when the rustling fern a little space
Is silent, comes the moaning of the sea,
Heard faint and far from this exalted place,
No louder than the murmur of a bee;
But evermore, along the mountain face
The shadows and the clouds go silently.
