We show that if M is a countable transitive model of $\text {ZF}$ and if $a,b$ are reals not in M, then there is a G generic over M such that $b \in L[a,G]$ . We then present several applications such as the following: if J is any countable transitive model of $\text {ZFC}$ and $M \not \subseteq J$ is another countable transitive model of $\text {ZFC}$ of the same ordinal height $\alpha $ , then there is a forcing extension N of J such that $M \cup N$ is not included in any transitive model of $\text {ZFC}$ of height $\alpha $ . Also, assuming $0^{\#}$ exists, letting S be the set of reals generic over L, although S is disjoint from the Turing cone above $0^{\#}$ , we have that for any non-constructible real a, $\{ a \oplus s : s \in S \}$ is cofinal in the Turing degrees.

Background:
Immune system markers may predict affective disorder treatment response, but whether an overall immune system marker predicts bipolar disorder treatment effect is unclear.
Methods:Bipolar CHOICE (N = 482) and LiTMUS (N = 283) were similar comparative effectiveness trials treating patients with bipolar disorder for 24 weeks with four different treatment arms (standard-dose lithium, quetiapine, moderate-dose lithium plus optimised personalised treatment (OPT) and OPT without lithium). We performed secondary mixed effects linear regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, smoking and body mass index to investigate relationships between pre-treatment white blood cell (WBC) levels and clinical global impression scale (CGI) response.
Results:Compared to participants with WBC counts of 4.5–10 × 109/l, participants with WBC < 4.5 or WBC ≥ 10 showed similar improvement within each specific treatment arm and in gender-stratified analyses.
Conclusions:An overall immune system marker did not predict differential treatment response to four different treatment approaches for bipolar disorder all lasting 24 weeks.

Objective
Immunological theories, particularly the sickness syndrome theory, may explain psychopathology in mood disorders. However, no clinical trials have investigated the association between overall immune system markers with a wide range of specific symptoms including potential gender differences.
MethodsWe included two similar clinical trials, the lithium treatment moderate-dose use study and clinical and health outcomes initiatives in comparative effectiveness for bipolar disorder study, enrolling 765 participants with bipolar disorder. At study entry, white blood cell (WBC) count was measured and psychopathology assessed with the Montgomery and Aasberg depression rating scale (MADRS). We performed analysis of variance and linear regression analyses to investigate the relationship between the deviation from the median WBC, and multinomial regression analysis between different WBC levels. All analyses were performed gender-specific and adjusted for age, body mass index, smoking, race, and somatic diseases.
ResultsThe overall MADRS score increased significantly for each 1.0×109/l deviation from the median WBC among 322 men (coefficient=1.10; 95% CI=0.32–1.89; p=0.006), but not among 443 women (coefficient=0.56; 95% CI=−0.19–1.31; p=0.14). Among men, WBC deviations were associated with increased severity of sadness, inner tension, reduced sleep, reduced appetite, concentration difficulties, inability to feel, and suicidal thoughts. Among women, WBC deviations were associated with increased severity of reduced appetite, concentration difficulties, lassitude, inability to feel, and pessimistic thoughts. Both higher and lower WBC levels were associated with increased severity of several specific symptoms.
ConclusionImmune system alterations were associated with increased severity of specific mood symptoms, particularly among men. Our results support the sickness syndrome theory, but furthermore emphasise the relevance to study immune suppression in bipolar disorder. Due to the explorative nature and cross-sectional design, future studies need to confirm these findings.

Material science tends to focus around a specific class of materials and devices. After an idea is created, an experiment is postulated, and then materials are grown and devices are fabricated. These materials and devices are characterized using a variety of techniques. Data from these laboratory steps are analyzed, conclusions are formulated, and knowledge is passed on through publications, presentations, and patents. Typically, data are tracked in the area of what is grown and what is measured, but corporate knowledge is often lost as to what motivated certain experiments or what was learned from those experiments. This can be due to many factors including corporate culture, lack of reporting of negative results, and lack of reporting of full data sets. Proper application of informatics must realize that data does not equal knowledge, but is the foundation for creating knowledge, which is far more useful than mere information. Combinatorial approaches for material growth, device fabrication, and subsequent characterization accelerate experimental throughput. Integrating these systems and their data at all levels ultimately will lead to key knowledge to discover new materials and invent new device structures. Well-designed informatics systems must fully relate all types of data and information, make full use of automation, enable data mining, and have an easy-to-use, fast, user interface.

In the mid to late 80's there was considerable effort directed at the hetroepitaxial growth of III-V's (GaAs, GaP and InP) on Si substrates for solar cell applications. The primary incentive for this work was the cost reduction of expensive substrate materials. This is particularly important when considering large scale production of terrestrial photovoltaic modules. In the U.S. these efforts produced cell efficiencies up to 21% and continued development of this solar cell structure is currently being pursued in Japan. Similar cost effective structures are being investigated at NREL such as the growth of polycrystalline GaAs films on inexpensive glass substrates for solar cell applications. Polycrystalline films, however, tend to contain a high density of grain boundaries which are regions for carrier recombination and enhanced dopant diffusion which can limit cell performance. In order to reduce the detrimental effects of grain boundaries, the growth of large grain (hence low boundary area) GaAs is being investigated
