Background
The prevalence of medical illnesses is high among patients with psychiatric disorders. The current study aimed to investigate multi-comorbidity in patients with psychiatric disorders in comparison to the general population. Secondary aims were to investigate factors associated with metabolic syndrome and treatment appropriateness of mental disorders.
MethodsThe sample included 54,826 subjects (64.73% females; 34.15% males; 1.11% nonbinary gender) from 40 countries (COMET-G study). The analysis was based on the registration of previous history that could serve as a fair approximation for the lifetime prevalence of various medical conditions.
ResultsAbout 24.5% reported a history of somatic and 26.14% of mental disorders. Mental disorders were by far the most prevalent group of medical conditions. Comorbidity of any somatic with any mental disorder was reported by 8.21%. One-third to almost two-thirds of somatic patients were also suffering from a mental disorder depending on the severity and multicomorbidity. Bipolar and psychotic patients and to a lesser extent depressives, manifested an earlier (15–20 years) manifestation of somatic multicomorbidity, severe disability, and probably earlier death. The overwhelming majority of patients with mental disorders were not receiving treatment or were being treated in a way that was not recommended. Antipsychotics and antidepressants were not related to the development of metabolic syndrome.
ConclusionsThe finding that one-third to almost two-thirds of somatic patients also suffered from a mental disorder strongly suggests that psychiatry is the field with the most trans-specialty and interdisciplinary value and application points to the importance of teaching psychiatry and mental health in medical schools and also to the need for more technocratically oriented training of psychiatric residents.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are promising candidates for use in alternative energy technologies. A full understanding of the reaction mechanisms in these dynamic material systems is required to optimize device performance and overcome present limitations. Here, we show that in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be used to study redox reactions and ionic conductivity in SOFCs in a gas environment at elevated temperature. We examine model ultrathin half and complete cells in two environmental TEMs using off-axis electron holography and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Our results from the model cells provide insight into the essential phenomena that are important for the operation of commercial devices. Changes in the activities of dopant cations in the solid electrolyte are detected during oxygen anion conduction, demonstrating the key role of dopants in electrolyte architecture in SOFCs.

It is difficult to get a real scale image of the solar system through lecture. A scale model is a classical and one of good solutions (e.g. Handa et al.2003, Handa et al.2008). Through this model, people living in or visiting to the city can physically understand the scale of the solar system. This scale gives 1 cm for Earth's diameter and 115 m for 1 AU. However, some gadget is required to make it attractive for public citizens.

Objectives:
To report a case of multifocal fibrosclerosis with a nine-year follow up, and to discuss this disease's radiological appearance and management. The disease is a rare systemic disorder of unknown cause characterised by fibrous proliferation involving multiple anatomical sites.
Case report:A 50-year-old woman presented with histological findings characterised by similar inflammatory processes involving the meninges, pituitary gland, peritoneum, retroperitoneum and orbits, prompting a search for a common pathophysiology. A diagnosis of multifocal fibrosclerosis was postulated. Symptom improvement was noted after treatment with prednisone and azathioprine.
Conclusion:This is the first documented case of involvement of the cochleovestibular nerve in a patient with multifocal fibrosclerosis. The rare association between fibrotic diseases and masses showing various clinical patterns should be kept in mind by otolaryngologists, and imaging performed to investigate for multifocal fibrosclerosis. However, diagnosis can only be confirmed with tissue biopsy and histopathological examination.

Optical and near-infrared observations of novae give us useful information for understanding the diversity of nova eruptions. Classical nova V1723 Aql was discovered by F. Kabashima and K. Nishiyama on 2010 September 11. We have conducted photometric and spectroscopic observations of V1723 Aql in both optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength regions since its discovery. The V-band decline time by 2 mag after the maximum, t2, was ~12 d. The apparent Fe II emission lines were also seen in the optical spectra. The Rc- and Ic-band light curves exhibited rapid declines (0.16 mag d−1 in Rc) 20 days after the visual maximum, while the NIR (J, H, and Ks) showed slow decline rates (~0.07 mag d−1). This rapid reddening suggests that dust particles formed during the very early phase of the expansion in V1723 Aql.

This article gives an overview of current neutron-scattering facilities and illustrates the capabilities of third-generation sources that are now under development. The new science that is driving this development has been illustrated in the articles in this issue of MRS Bulletin and in a previous issue published in 1999 [MRS Bull.24 (12) (1999) p. 14]. The scale of these facilities is such that only three of them are envisaged worldwide, in the Asia Pacific region, Europe, and America. Two construction projects, the spallation neutron sources in the United States (SNS) and in Japan (J-PARC), are now well under way, while the European proposal for a spallation source (ESS) is still awaiting a decision to start construction.

An optical-capacitance-transient spectroscopy (O-CTS) method was used to characterize the defects in 3C-SiC on Si. The O-CTS measurement enables us to estimate optical threshold energy and optical cross section for the defects. In the O-CTS spectrum, a peak was observed for photon energy hv larger than 0.5 eV. This peak was thought to be due to the ND1 center, which was also observed by deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and found to have a thermal activation energy of 0.37 eV. The optical cross section for the center increased with hv for hv<0.6 eV and then decreased with increasing hv. The apparent optical threshold energy was about 0.47 eV. Another deep levels which have optical threshold energy of around 1.4 eV were also observed.

In order to assess microbial transport through compacted buffer material consisting of bentonite and silica sand with a density of 1.2, 1.6 or 1.8 g/cm3, sterilized test pieces with the diameter of 50 mm and the depth of 25 mm were fed with bacteria, Escherichia coli. The bacteria freely diffused when the proportion of Na-bentonite was 20 wt% or that of Ca-bentonite was 50 wt%. Bacterial movement was less than 5 mm in three weeks when the proportion of Na-bentonite was 70-100 wt% or that of Ca-bentonite was 100 wt%. A high proportion of bentonite is essential to slow down microbial entrance to the surface of a nuclear-waste container.

n-type 3C-SiC was heteroepitaxially grown on n-type Si(100) substrates using HMDS (hexamethyldisilane) and characterized by DLTS (deep level transient spectroscopy) measurements. In order to investigate relationship of defect density with epilayer thickness, epilayers with various thicknesses were grown. Relatively thin (<1.0μm thick) epilayers were found to contain defects with energy levels distributed in a wide energy range, while relatively thick (>2.2μm thick) epilayers contain a defect with an activation energy of 0.25eV. This defect level is slightly shallower than that in 3C-SiC grown by SiH4 and C3H8 (∼0.3eV).

It is shown that porous polycrystalline Si (PPS) diodes operate as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with efficiencies comparable to conventional porous silicon (PS) diodes fabricated on singlecrystalline substrates. Judging from the electroluminescence (EL) characteristics such as emission spectra, diode current dependence of EL intensity, and its temperature dependence, the common EL mechanism seems to exist in PPS and PS diodes. Observed similarity in the photoluminescence (PL) properties between PPS and PS is consistent with this hypothesis. The capability of a poly-Si thin film transistor as a driver of PPS-LED is also demonstrated.

Microdefects in Cr-doped SI LEC (001) GaAs wafers which were implanted with Zn+ or As /Zn and capless-annealed in an As ambient have been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. Most of the microdefects in Zn +- implanted GaAs specimens were identified as precipitates and stacking fault tetrahedra (SFTs). Every SFT was accompanied by a precipitate at the apex. Most of the precipitates were distributed from Rp to Rp + 2∆Rp. Two types (α and β) of SFTs were differentiated by the arrangement of atoms in the core of the stair-rod partial dislocations bounding the periphery of the SFTs in a polar Frystal. β-SFTs were, however, predominantly formed in Zn+ implanted GaAs specimens. Dual implantation of As+ and Zn+ suppressed the formation of SFTs, but not that of precipitates. The formation of SFTs was found to be influenced by the deviation in stoichiometry.
