In this book, we ask how societies are made possible and how will democracy look in the future. We look for answers in the doings of young members participating in society: what kind of actions they take, which political practices they follow and how they tread the path towards the future by walking it. In a world marked by polarization, sustainability crises and fastpaced transformation of media environments, how do young people dream, imagine and engage in action to reach towards our common future?
We start responding these questions with two vignettes of talking with young societally active people. First, Lucy. She was under 20 years old and had just been elected as a city councillor in municipal elections. She was from an affluent neighbourhood and studied in a prestigious programme at a top university. When asked about how her party affiliation started, she painted a picture of her hobbies:
‘Well, often people are into sports or exercising or those kinds of things, and I was never into group sports. I was getting bored with my art classes and thus not having any hobbies that I would’ve been interested in anymore. I started, naturally, pondering the things I am good at, and then it just happened that I joined the [centre- right] national Coalition Party Youth organization without knowing anyone there previously.’
She was good at talking to people and had strong opinions on society, and was in need of a hobby to spice up her spare time. Youth politics presented itself as a natural option, which then led to standing up in a local election – the leap from a pastime into a serious commitment to political activism was aided by impressive merits in official youth participation channels, such as the local youth council.
The second scene takes place in a local bar. A couple of slightly older activists are having a discussion over a beer on how to recruit new volunteers to organize the DIY urban activism street party they have been running for a few years:
Alex: Three questions to be discussed with the potential volunteers: Why are we doing Kallio Block Party? Why are you doing it? How do you connect it to your greatest dream, and what is that dream?
