A ratio scale of subjective magnitude is developed from paired-comparison data. The model attempts to combine arguments of Restle, Ekman, and Luce relating data obtained from paired comparisons and corresponding data from direct psychophysical scaling methods at the ratio level. The basic set-theoretical model involves the use of imperfectly nested sets. A numerical example illustrates the application of the theory.

(1) An analysis of the method of paired comparisons shows that Case V and Case VI, the latter characterized by log-normal distributions and Weber’s law for subjective continua, are fundamentally indistinguishable. Case VI produces a log-arithmetic interval scale of subjective magnitude. (2) It is demonstrated that the difference between discrimination scales according to Case V and from category rating is due to the difference between intra- and interindividual variability yielding different Weber functions.

The concept of distal similarity that plays a crucial role in Edelman's theory of representation is called into question in this commentary on theoretical as well as empirical grounds. A possible confusion between shape and (knowledge of) its referent, the problem of the subjective world, redundancy, and large individual differences in subjective space encountered in contrived universes are discussed.
