Our overall goal was to enhance the usability and interactivity of the RE-AIM website (re-aim.org) and improve resources to support the application of the RE-AIM framework within the context of dissemination & implementation (D&I) research and practice.
Methods:
We applied a mixed-methods approach to obtain user feedback from 24 D&I researchers and practitioners. Usability (System Usability Scale) and interactivity (Interactivity Scale) were assessed through validated surveys, at baseline and after two iterative rounds of website modifications (Phase 1 and Phase 2). We also conducted qualitative assessments at each phase.
Results:
Qualitative baseline and Phase 1 findings indicated a need to simplify organization, enhance information accessibility, provide concrete guidance on applying RE-AIM, and clarify contextual factors related to RE-AIM constructs. After streamlining website and homepage organization, Phase 2 qualitative results suggested improved user navigation experience; users also requested greater interactivity. Modifications included: new interactive planning tool and a video introduction of contextual factors influencing RE-AIM outcomes. Significant improvements were found in the SUS score from baseline to Phase 1(64.2[SD18.7] to 80.8 [SD 12.1] (p < .05) and remained higher in Phase 2(77.1[SD 15] (p = 0.08). Interactivity also improved from baseline to Phase 2(3.5[SD1.2] to 41[0.9], though not statistically significant.
Conclusion:
User-centered feedback on online resources, as exemplified by this use case example of enhancements to the RE-AIM website, are important in bridging the gap between research and practice, and the revised website should be more accessible and useful to users.
Understanding, categorizing, and using implementation science theories, models, and frameworks is a complex undertaking. The issues involved are even more challenging given the large number of frameworks and that some of them evolve significantly over time. As a consequence, researchers and practitioners may be unintentionally mischaracterizing frameworks or basing actions and conclusions on outdated versions of a framework.
Methods:
This paper addresses how the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) framework has been described, summarizes how the model has evolved over time, and identifies and corrects several misconceptions.
Results:
We address 13 specific areas where misconceptions have been noted concerning the use of RE-AIM and summarize current guidance on these issues. We also discuss key changes to RE-AIM over the past 20 years, including the evolution to Pragmatic Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model, and provide resources for potential users to guide application of the framework.
Conclusions:
RE-AIM and many other theories and frameworks have evolved, been misunderstood, and sometimes been misapplied. To some degree, this is inevitable, but we conclude by suggesting some actions that reviewers, framework developers, and those selecting or applying frameworks can do to prevent or alleviate these problems.
To examine public commitments for encouraging United States consumers to make healthy dietary purchases with their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits among of prevalent SNAP-authorised retailers.
Setting:
National SNAP-authorised retail landscape in addition to stores located in California and Virginia, two states targetted for a Partnership for a Healthier America pilot social marketing campaign.
Participants:
SNAP-authorised retailers with the most store locations in selected settings.
Design:
A review of retailers’ publicly available business information was conducted (November 2016–February 2017). Webpages and grey literature sources were accessed to identify corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports and commitments describing strategies to encourage healthy consumer purchases aligned with the 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Evidence was organised using a marketing-mix and choice-architecture (MMCA) framework to characterise strategies used among eight possible types (i.e. place, profile, portion, pricing, promotion, priming, prompting and proximity).
Results:
Of the SNAP-authorised retailers (n 38) reviewed, more than half (n 20; 52·6 %) provided no information in the public domain relevant to the research objective. Few retailers (n 8; 21·1 %) had relevant CSR information; grey literature sources (n 52 articles across seventeen retailers) were more commonly identified. SNAP-authorised retailers in majority committed to increasing the number of healthy products available for purchase (profile).
Conclusions:
Substantial improvements are needed to enhance the capacity and commitments of SNAP-authorised retailers to use diverse strategies to promote healthy purchases among SNAP recipients. Future research could explore feasible approaches to improve dietary behaviours through sector changes via public–private partnerships, policy changes, or a combination of government regulatory and voluntary business actions.
