We propose an easy to implement yield curve extrapolation method to determine long-term interest rates suitable for regulatory valuation. We empirically evaluate this approach for the German nominal bond market, by estimating the model on bonds with maturities up to 20 years and assessing the out-of-sample performance for bonds with maturities beyond 20 years. Even though observed long-term yields are somewhat lower than the predicted yields, the method performs quite well empirically given its simplicity. We perform a case study on pension fund liability valuation and show that our proposed method would have a substantial impact on liability values.
The main goal is to illustrate that the so-called indirect function of a cooperative game in characteristic function form is applicable to determine the nucleolus for a subclass of coalitional games called compromise stable transferable utility (TU) games. In accordance with the Fenchel–Moreau theory on conjugate functions, the indirect function is known as the dual representation of the characteristic function of the coalitional game. The key feature of a compromise stable TU game is the coincidence of its core with a box prescribed by certain upper and lower core bounds. For the purpose of the determination of the nucleolus, we benefit from the interrelationship between the indirect function and the prekernel of coalitional TU games. The class of compromise stable TU games contains the subclasses of clan games, big boss games and $1$- and $2$-convex $n$-person TU games. As an adjunct, this paper reports the indirect function of clan games for the purpose of determining their nucleolus.
We experimentally, numerically and theoretically demonstrate a novel method of producing a stream of widely spaced high-velocity droplets by imposing a superposition of two Rayleigh–Plateau-unstable modes on a liquid jet. The wavelengths of the two modes are chosen close to the wavelength of the most unstable mode. The interference pattern of the two superimposed modes causes local asymmetries in the capillary tension. The velocity of the initial droplets depends on these local asymmetries. Due to their different velocities, the droplets coalesce to produce a stream of larger droplets spaced at a much larger distance than the initial droplets. We analytically derive the perturbations that robustly induce this process and investigate the influence of the nonlinear interactions of the two Rayleigh–Plateau-unstable modes on the coalescence process. Experiments and numerical simulations demonstrate that the jet breakup and the subsequent droplet merging are fully governed by the selected modes.
