Established in 1977 at the Congressional Black Caucus’ behest and funded largely by corporations, TransAfrica is a critical institution. Using research and advocacy, it seeks to influence US foreign policy toward Africa and the Caribbean.
Directed by attorney and founding president Randall Robinson, who served until 2001, TransAfrica's role has been and is crucial. It lobbied successfully for more equity in African and Caribbean financial and humanitarian aid; immigration; and cultural exchange. It organized and headed protests against apartheid at the South African Embassy, which inspired demonstrations nationwide, the Anti-Apartheid Act (1986), and international sanctions that helped abolish South Africa's white-only government in 1994.
