The E major Piano Sonata Op. 6
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 05 November 2011
und ich kreise jahrtausendelang;
Rilke, Das Stundenbuch, ‘Das Buch vom mönchischen Leben’
In the years following the Octet, Mendelssohn repeatedly returned to the idea of cyclic form in his instrumental music. The Piano Sonatas in E, Op. 6 (1826), and B♭ (1827, Op. post. 106) were followed by the String Quartet in A minor Op. 13 (1827), and two years later by the E♭ Quartet Op. 12. This series of cyclic works is quite remarkable by any standard, and shows the composer exploring the formal and expressive implications of cyclic thematic recall and unification long before any other musician was seriously to take up this design.
