Summary

  1. Ich lebe mein Leben in wachsenden Ringen,

  2. die sich über die Dinge ziehn.

  3. Ich werde den letzten vielleicht nicht vollbringen,

  4. aber versuchen will ich ihn.

  5. Ich kreise um Gott, um den uralten Turm,

  6. und ich kreise jahrtausendelang;

  7. und ich weiß noch nicht: bin ich ein Falke, ein Sturm

  8. oder ein großer Gesang.

  9. Rilke, Das Stundenbuch, ‘Das Buch vom mönchischen Leben’

In the years following the Octet, Mendelssohn repeatedly returned to the idea of cyclic form in his instrumental music. The Piano Sonatas in E, Op. 6 (1826), and B♭ (1827, Op. post. 106) were followed by the String Quartet in A minor Op. 13 (1827), and two years later by the E♭ Quartet Op. 12. This series of cyclic works is quite remarkable by any standard, and shows the composer exploring the formal and expressive implications of cyclic thematic recall and unification long before any other musician was seriously to take up this design.
