Acknowledgments

This volume is like an iceberg: What you see reflects only a small part of the enormous efforts that lie below the surface.

The book began with a workshop on election security cohosted by Indiana University and Australia National University in Washington, DC, in 2018. The gathering brought together academics, practitioners, and policymakers from both universities, setting the stage for a follow-up engagement in 2019, this time in Canberra, Australia. From these conversations sprung a realization that more work was needed that would consider the broader set of challenges surrounding election security, including threats to election infrastructure along with managing misinformation and disinformation. The editors would like to thank all those who facilitated these early discussions, including Angie Raymond, Chris Painter, Amanda Craig Deckard, Fred Cate, and Rachel Dockery, for their support.

An additional Defending Democracy Colloquium took place in 2023, facilitated by the Ostrom Workshop. A special thanks goes out to the team that made those events possible including Emily Castle, Anna Goodman, and Kari McMullen.

The editors would like to acknowledge the contributions made by the phalanx of graduate students from Indiana University involved in copy editing the chapter drafts, including Simon Sun and Sarah Doherty.

Finally, our thanks go out to Matt Galloway, Jadyn Fauconier-Herry, and the team at Cambridge University Press for their editorial and production assistance.

Funding for this volume has been graciously provided by the Ostrom Workshop, GEODE, and the Hewlett Foundation, with open access being generously supported by a gift from the Microsoft Corporation.
