The accompanying analytical Table of the genera of the Rhabdophora which are especially treated of in the present paper is here offered as a first and suggestive sketch for an improved arrangement of these forms. The foregoing conclusions have been employed in its construction, and are embodied in the general scheme.

During the past few years Mr. Charles Moore and Mr. J. McMurtrie have called attention to a remarkable inversion of strata, which was indicated by the working of coal under the Mountain Limestone near Vobster, on the north of the Mendip Hills. And this fact renders necessary an important modification in the geological sections of the district.

The granitic sheets of Tremearne are believed to have originated from the roof of the Tregonning granite and to have undergone lateral differentiation from leucogranite to aplite with associated pegmatite in a direction away from this granite. Several types of banding are described from the pegmatite-rich region at the Megiliggar Rocks. Some decimetre-scale banding is the result of intrusion of “magmatic” aplitic material, but coarse pegmatite bands are believed to have grown in solid aplite. A close examination of centimetre-scale banding and fine-banding in aplite (line rock) indicates that this is related to pegmatite development and is metasomatic. The mobility of alkalies and the concentration of potash in pegmatite relative to aplite is discussed.

Botanists who study the tissues of Living plants, or those palæobotanists who deal with actual petrifactions, have scarcely any idea of the difficulties that meet the worker on carbonised plantremains, especially when the material is so limited that the research cannot be repeated in the event of damage to a single preparation. Moreover, the research can be conducted only on those portions of the tissue that are cutinised, since all the rest have been carbonised or destroyed in the course of fossilisation, and no longer appear after the preparations have been bleached. The student of Mesozoic plants is in the further unhappy position that, with a few notable exceptions, he rarely finds portions of the plant that show any structure; he in particular must direct his attention to the cutinised membranes, and above all to the cuticle of the leaves and stems and, in the case of Pteridophyta, to the spores.

Having a short time since drawn up a brief statement of the evidences upon which the presumed antiquity of the human race in Western Europe is based, and also some account of the animals found associated with early man in this region, I have ventured to think it may be found of sufficient interest to lay before this Society.

As the remains of insects are rarely found in Carboniferous strata, a short account of three imperfect specimens, which have been discovered in the Durham coal-field, may not be deemed valueless. Indeed, with the exceptions of the specimens described from Coal-brook Dale by Prestwich, twenty-five years ago, and the examples of Xylobius sigillariœ of Dawson,—discovered by Mr. Tindall, in the Lower Coal Measures, near Huddersfield, and by Mr. Thomas Brown, of Stewarton, in the Upper Coal Measures of Kilmaurs,—I am not aware of any other fossils of this class having been noticed as occuring in Carboniferous rocks in England.

Wall rocks on either side of narrow fluorite veins cutting Dinantian Limestones at Butts Quarry, Derbyshire, exhibit unusual and spectacular alteration structures. Buff, ‘blackened’ and grey limestone lithologies, containing significant amounts of euhedral quartz crystals, occur in a zoned sequence adjacent to the veins. The alteration structures are attributed to a two-stage process involving silicification and subsequent re-mobilization of silica by fluids passing along the vein.
