A detailed account is given of the structural features of the Strathspey Granite and Pegmatite Complex together with information about the metamorphic and tectonic environment of the surrounding metasediments. The evidence indicates that the granite core of the complex was intruded shortly after the latest phase of folding recorded in the area had taken place. The country rocks were still at relatively high temperatures at the time of intrusion and were deformed by the granite. The granite emplacement is also shown to be a separate event not directly connected with the formation of the regional migmatite complex, which extends for 48 km to the north-east.
The record by Dr. Rastall (1) of new types of brookite from the Dogger of North-East Yorkshire prompts a note on the brookite of the Millstone Grit of West and South-West Yorkshire, since the brookite of this latter formation presents interesting features somewhat different from those presented by the brookite of the Dogger.
The fauna of a Lower Carboniferous (S1) fissure near Clitheroe, Lancashire, is listed. Coignouina acanthina sp. nov. (Otarionidae) is described, together with its unusual ‘eye-mound’ which bears tubercles rather than lenses. Note is made of new material of C. acanthina (Coignou) which necessitates modification of Osmólska's (1967) reconstruction of the cephalon. Carbonocoryphe hahnorum sp. nov. (Proetidae) is also described and a brief account presented of its variation, postlarval ontogeny and palaeo-ecology.
The fossils to which this communication relates were described and the deductions drawn from their mode of occurrence in a paper I submitted to the Geological Society of London in 1896, but as that paper was not printed in extenso (see Q.J.G.S., vol. liii, p. 245), with the Editor's kind permission the gist of it appears as follows.
