A wide range of visual elements is available to help you illustrate and make your point in a presentation. Let's focus on five of them here. Choosing the right visual depends on your message and the comparisons you hope to make.
The pie chart. This is among the most common of graphic support ideas, perhaps because its design is so basic and it's relatively easy to understand. A pie chart consists of a circle (or pie shape) with triangular components created by drawing lines from the center point to the edge of the diagram. The purpose of a pie chart is to show the size of each part as a percentage of the whole. The source of revenues in an annual budget, for example, is easily represented in a pie chart. The general advice on constructing such charts is this: no more than half-a-dozen components, each colored or shaded differently, and the most important or largest component should begin at the twelve o'clock position and the rest should move in descending clockwise order.
The bar chart. This familiar graphic shows comparisons across a horizontal scale. The vertical axis of a bar chart is used to label the items being compared or measured, while the horizontal axis shows the frequency or measurement. Bar charts customarily show item comparisons and provide a viewer with relative size at a glance. The best advice is to keep the number of horizontal bars to six or fewer and to use color to identify key components.
The column chart. This is a more common variation of the bar chart, featuring vertical columns. The column chart shows changes over time, while the pie chart and bar chart each make comparisons at one moment in time. The horizontal scale, usually labeled across the bottom of the chart, shows progression in time with earlier dates to the left and later dates to the right. The vertical axis shows the measurement that's being compared. You can compare two items with a column chart by pairing those 42 items in differently colored (or shaded) columns and showing how each measured at a particular moment in time.
One of your most important tasks as a speaker is to select the type of evidence that is most likely to lead listeners to accept your point of view. So where do you find that material?
Broadly speaking, you have a choice between primary research and secondary research. Primary evidence is original or first-hand information that you gather yourself. Secondary evidence is all of the information gathered by other people. The main sources of primary research are interviews and surveys, while secondary research is available in literally hundreds of millions of library and online sources. As you consider the wealth of evidence available to you, think about what your audience will find most interesting, convincing and compelling. You're doing the research and gathering the evidence on their behalf.
The advantage of secondary research is, quite literally, that it's already been done for you. Professional librarians invest time and public resources thinking about what to archive, how to catalogue it, and how to help you find it. A good librarian, in fact, is worth his or her weight in gold; all you have to do is explain, in general terms, what you're looking for and he or she will help you with the rest. Your public or university library's reference desk is a great place to start. Just present yourself as an interested, curious reader and the librarian will take it from there.
Among the assets you'll find in just about any library are monographs and books, periodicals, newspapers, media and searchable databases. Libraries are famous for the number and quality of books they contain, but in many ways these are among the least useful of the resources you'll find there. The real problem with books and bound volumes is that most of them are simply outdated. The process of writing, editing, and publishing a book is so time-consuming that by the time it reaches library or bookstore shelves, the information is likely not as current as 23 you may need. But the advantage of books is that they are carefully researched, professionally edited, and for the most part tend to focus on one, coherent subject.
Stanley Cavell’s moral perfectionism places the task of cultivating richer self-understanding and self-expression at the center of corporate life. We show how his approach reframes business as an opportunity for moral soul-craft, achieved through the articulation of increasingly reflective inner life in organizational culture. Instead of norming constraints on business activity, perfectionism opens new possibilities for conducting commercial exchange as a form of conversation, leading to personal growth. This approach guides executives in designing businesses that foster genius and channel creativity, while giving all stakeholders a meaningful voice within a culture of trust. We first give an account of Cavellian perfectionism. Then, we explain how this underrepresented strand of moral reflection challenges and enriches, but does not supplant, prevailing ethical theories—including other versions of perfectionism. We then demonstrate the salience of Cavellian perfectionism to business ethics through examples from marketing, human resources, and executive organizational design and development.
The estimates used to value mortality risk reductions are a major determinant of the benefits of many public health and environmental policies. These estimates (typically expressed as the value per statistical life, VSL) describe the willingness of those affected by a policy to exchange their own income for the risk reductions they experience. While these values are relatively well studied in high-income countries, less is known about the values held by lower-income populations. We identify 26 studies conducted in the 172 countries considered low- or middle-income in any of the past 20 years; several have significant limitations. Thus there are few or no direct estimates of VSL for most such countries. Instead, analysts typically extrapolate values from wealthier countries, adjusting only for income differences. This extrapolation requires selecting a base value and an income elasticity that summarizes the rate at which VSL changes with income. Because any such approach depends on assumptions of uncertain validity, we recommend that analysts conduct a standardized sensitivity analysis to assess the extent to which their conclusions change depending on these estimates. In the longer term, more research on the value of mortality risk reductions in low- and middle-income countries is essential.
We examine the potential for management-worker alliances when employees have substantial voting rights, and how such alliances affect the balance of power between managers and shareholders. We find that substantial employee voting rights exacerbate the manager-shareholder conflicts. Specifically, they entrench incumbent managers and allow them to pursue value-destroying acquisitions by undercutting the disciplinary influence of the corporate control market. Importantly, employee support for managers is conditional on favorable treatment of employees. Our findings are consistent with Pagano and Volpin’s theory of worker-management alliances and highlight the potential risks associated with large employee voting power.
We provide a new framework for valuing multidimensional real options where opportunities to exercise the option are generated by an exogenous Poisson process, which can be viewed as a liquidity constraint on decision times. This approach, which we call the Poisson optional stopping times (POST) method, finds the value function as a monotone sequence of lower bounds. In a case study, we demonstrate that the frequently used quasi-analytic method yields a suboptimal policy and an inaccurate value function. The proposed method is demonstrably correct, straightforward to implement, reliable in computation, and broadly applicable in analyzing multidimensional option-valuation problems.
This Element provides an overview of cultural entrepreneurship scholarship and seeks to lay the foundation for a broader and more integrative research agenda at the interface of organization theory and entrepreneurship. Its scholarly agenda includes a range of phenomena from the legitimation of new ventures, to the construction of novel or alternative organizational or collective identities, and, at even more macro levels, to the emergence of new entrepreneurial possibilities and market categories. Michael Lounsbury and Mary Ann Glynn develop novel theoretical arguments and discuss the implications for mainstream entrepreneurship research, focusing on the study of entrepreneurial processes and possibilities.
Although venture capitalists (VCs) can choose from thousands of potential syndicate partners, many co-syndicate with small groups of preferred partners. We term these groups “VC communities.” We apply computational methods from the physical sciences to 3 decades of syndication data to identify these communities. We find that communities comprise VCs that are similar in age, connectedness, and functional style but undifferentiated in spatial location. Machine-learning tools classify communities into 3 groups roughly ordered by their age and reach. Community VC financing is associated with faster maturation and greater innovation, especially for early-stage firms without an innovation history.
In this qualitative study we examine the role of caste, class, and Dalit janitorial labor in the aftermath of floods in Chennai, India, in 2015. Drawing from a variety of sources including interviews, social media, and news coverage, we studied how Dalit (formerly known as ‘untouchable’) janitors were treated during the performance of janitorial labor for cleaning the city. Our study focuses on two theoretical premises: (a) caste-based social relations reproduce inequalities by devaluing Dalit labor as ‘dirty work’; and (b) Dalit subjectivities, labor, and sufferings including occupational hazards become invisible and ungrievable forcing Dalits to provide a counter narrative to preserve the memory of their trauma and dignity injuries. We find that the discursive construction of janitorial labor as dirty work forced Dalit janitors to work in appalling and unsafe working conditions. Janitors suffered several dignity injuries in terms of social exclusion and a lack of recognition for their efforts and accomplishments. Specifically, we examine various ways through which caste, dirty work, and dignity intersected in the narrative accounts of Dalit janitors. We also explore memory and how processes of remembering and forgetting affected the dignity claims of Dalit janitors.
We study how investor sentiment affects stock prices around the world. Relying on households’ Google search behavior, we construct a weekly measure of sentiment for 38 countries during 2004–2014. We validate the sentiment index in tests using sports outcomes and show that the sentiment measure is a contrarian predictor of country-level market returns. Furthermore, we document an important role of global sentiment in stock markets.
