Biotechnology Design is a cross-disciplinary and dynamic research field, where researchers from design, biology, computation, materials science, and engineering collaborate to explore and experiment in search of the solutions the 21st century demands for regenerative ecologies— from new biomaterials for everyday use, to interactive bio-digital systems, to large-scale interventions in food and cityscapes. Biotechnology Design offers a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of research in these areas, advancing knowledge that emphasizes socio-ethical responsibility, multi-species ecosystems, and ecological sustainability, while addressing the intrinsically complex challenges of contemporary biotechnological innovation.
Such work is often hampered by traditional publishing formats, as researchers want to explore experimental and emerging, not yet perfected models, and use tools and collaborators from fields they may not be familiar with and may not traditionally work with.
The scope of Biotechnology Design is any research outputs that employ design principles to biotechnology and bioengineering, to find innovative solutions in food production, materials, travel, health and beyond.
