In his note on p. 191, Dr. Dyar raises an interesting question, concerning which I would like a general expression of opinion for my own guidance.

Among the material received for study by M. Guenée from the British Museum, perhaps also from other sources, was a considerable number of specimens and drawings collected, bred or drawn by John Abbott, of Georgia.

Not all of the Abbott drawings went to the British Museum, for I saw some in Paris ten years ago, and not all the Abbott drawings have been identified, for I saw in the British Museum many pictures representing insects thet have not been taken since, so far as I know, while I identified a few recently described, among these century-old drawings.

Alate vivipara.—Color of head and thorax yellow to very light brown; abdomen pale yellow; cornicles, legs and the antennae concolorous with abdomen.

Meusurements: Body, 2.14-2.5 mm.; hind tibia, 1.08 mm.; antennal segments, III .80-.97 mm.; IV .51-.58 mm.; V .40-.46 mm.; VI .14 plus .84-.90 mm.; cornicles, .21 mm.

General ground color yellowish white to semihyaline. Color markings red or orange. Veitex with semblance of white spots surrounded with red, heavier red spot on tip. Pronotum with median, rather small, triangular spot with U-shaped anterior margin and usual angular spots back of each eye. Scutellum with spot on tip, basal angles yellow with red dash on exterior margin of each anterior corner. Clavi with usual red basal anchor-shaped mark, often broken in middle, and quite long dash near tip.

Lederer characterizes Asteroscopus essentially as follows: Narrow-winged owlets, resembling Bombycids in the shaggy, loose vestiture. Palpi short, not exceeding the front, drooping. Tongue short and weak. Eyes naked, with bristly lashes. Antennæ comparatively long, with a tuft of hair at the base; in the male with short pectinations to the tip; in the female with sharp, ciliated angles to each joint. Thorax broad, convex, clothed with long, woolly hair. Abdomen shaggy, untufted. Body beneath and legs with dense woolly vestiture. Legs short, anterior tibia with a long claw at the tip.

Two new species of the genus Stenus Latr. (subgenus Hypostenus) are described: one from Quebec, the other one from Newfoundland.

The preparatory stagees of this pretty Phalenid are not given in Packard's “Monograph of the Geometrid Moths”, nor cited by Henry Edwards in his “Catalogue of the Preparatoy Stages of N. A. Lepidoptera”; and, since they differ in some regards from the general characters of the caterpillars of the genus as given by Guenée, I have drawn up a brief account of larva and pupa.

Idolocoris agilis Uhler is redescribed and a lectotype designated. Three new species of Dicyphus Fieber are described: confusus from Alberta, British Columbia, Colorado, and Idaho; similis from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Hampshire, and New York; tibialis from Alberta, British Columbia, Colorado, and Montana, Left claspers of the four species are illustrated.

This pine-boring Pyralid was described by Prof. A. R. Grote in a paper read at the Nashville Meeting, 1877, of the American Assoc. for the Adv. of Science, and published in Canandian Entomologist, vol. ix., 161. During the summer and autumn of 1878, and again this year, I have made some observations upon the occnrrence, larval habits and parasitic enemies of this moth, and am able to state concerning them some additional facts of interest.

In the Ottawa region about the middle of June, frequently certain leaves of the common alder, Alnus rugosa var. americana (Regel) Fern., are drawn together by strands of silk, concealing an elongate silken tube or case. The latter is occupied by an active brownish-grey larva that, when unmolested, extends itself from the broadly open end of the rube to feed on the foliage. This insect is the phycitid Acrobasis rubrifasciella Pack., a species that occors in northeastern United States and adjacent parts of Canada.

Population growth and dispersion of Tetranychus mcdanieli McGregor were studied in an experiment conducted on Red Delicious apple trees grown in a light and temperature controlled walk-in growth room. Lloyd’s index of mean crowding was calculated as a means of interpreting aggregation patterns; however, it was found that mean colony size was a more generally useful population parameter . The regression of on mean density (m) and the ratio of mean density to were used to determine and characterize the patterns of dispersion obtained under the experimental conditions of the study.

It was shown that the ratio of mean density to is the proportion of sampling units (i.e. individual leaves) that would have a colony size of individuals per unit, all other units being unoccupied. Characterization by the concomitant parameters and provides a more sensitive and meaningful method of describing populations than does the arithmetic mean.

The data indicated that adult female populations of T. mcdanieli tend to be distributed as clumped colonies on apple trees. A plant feeding mite damage scale was devised to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of gross observational estimates as indicators of spider mite levels.

Melanoplus Browinii, sp. nov.– General colour brownish fuscous. Head slightly prominent, witht the occiput elevated a little above the pronotum and with a black postcular stripe; interspace between the eyes no broader than the basal segment of the antennæ' fastigium moderately declivent and deeply sulcate except above, where it is biseriately punctate. Eyes large and somewhat prominent, distinctly longer than the infraocular portion of the genæ. Antennæ long, in the male as long or longer than the posterior femora. Pronotum equal in the anterior portion, but quite noticeably expanding on the metazona, truncate anteriorly, posteriorly obtuse angulate, the angle rounded; lateral lobes marked with a more or less interrupted black stripe which is continuous with the postocular stripe of the head. Median carina distinct only on the metazona, which is shorter than the prozona. Prosternal spine suberect, pyramidal, apically acuminate.

A study of halictine nests in a habitat near Toronto leads to the discovery of an undescribed species of the genus Dialictus that shares morphological resemblances with Dialictus rohweri (Ellis) and architectural similarities with Augochlorella striata (Provancher).

Fenvalerate applied at field rates (3.4–13.7 g AI/100 L) to pear foliage in early season remained highly active to the predatory mite Typhlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt for several months until leaf drop. According to leaf disc assays, fresh deposits of fenvalerate caused considerable direct mortality but most of the later mortality was apparently caused by repellency of the residue and subsequent mite departures. Fenvalerate applied to the bark lost its contact activity more quickly than on foliage. In contrast, adult female Tetranychus urticae Koch suffered no mortality when exposed to leaf deposits, but at high dosages of fenvalerate egg laying was temporarily reduced. In slide-dip tests fenvalerate was about 5 times more toxic to T. occidentalis than to T. urticae (LC50's of 1.21 and 6.74 g AI/100 L, respectively). Our data suggest that because of the persistence of fenvalerate and the high sensitivity of T. occidentalis to this compound this predatory mite would not be able to reestablish after foliar fenvalerate applications and provide biological control of phytophagous mites.

The structure and behavior of a sterile male intergeneric hybrid tenebrionid beetle from the Namib Desert are described. Compared with the courtship performance of males of the parental types the hybrid male was intermediate in choice of females. The parental species occur together in the field and there is a broad habitat overlap in utilized parts of the environment. Intergeneric courtship was regularly observed, but only one instance of hybridization was noted.

Since any work in this group must of necessity be a review of that done by the late Dr. Geo. D. Hulst, I want to state in this begining of mine, that it is not to be regarded as a criticism.

Dr. Hulst made (for him) some curious errors, which will be noted later on, but the immense work he did in untangling the synonymy of this variable group, and in his two trips across the ocean to study the types, cannot be overestimated, and by it mine is rendered easy.

The adults, mummies, and final-instar larvae of the eight hymenopterous parasites of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), in Eastern Canada are described and illustrated. The history, synonymy, and biology of each species, and the problems of species differentiation in two of the genera, Aphidius and Praon, are discussed. Keys are given to separate the adults, mummies, and cast skins of the last larval instar.
