This paper summarises our work on the role of magnetic fields in accretion disks presented in two papers elsewhere. In the first part (a summary of part of Kuncic & Bicknell 1999), we present a formal development of the equations governing the structure of an accretion disk containing magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The importance of the different terms in the energy and momentum equations is discussed, and a parametrisation of the unresolved processes is suggested that could be used to make further progress. We briefly explore whether an MHD accretion disk can transport a significant part of the gravitational power into a corona by buoyancy. In the second part, we present some exploratory calculations of the vertical structure of accretion disks, in which non-local dissipation of energy due to the buoyant transport of magnetic field energy is taken into account. It is argued that the efficiency of buoyant magnetic transport depends very strongly on the size of the coherent magnetic regions. If the size of the buoyant cells is not very close to the disk thickness, magnetic energy generated by dynamo action inside the disk will be dissipated locally, and will not be available to transport a significant part of the accretion luminosity into a corona.

We present new radial velocities for 306 bright (R < 16) galaxies in a 77 deg2 region of the Shapley supercluster, measured with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. The galaxies we measured were uniformly distributed over the survey area, in contrast to previous samples which were concentrated in several rich Abell clusters. Most of the galaxies (230) were members of the Shapley supercluster: they trace out two previously unknown sheets of galaxies linking the Abell clusters of the supercluster. In a 44 deg2 area of the supercluster excluding the Abell clusters, these sheets alone represent an overdensity of a factor of 2·0 ± 0·2 compared to a uniform galaxy distribution. The supercluster is not flattened in the Declination direction as has been suggested in previous papers. Within our survey area the new galaxies contribute an additional 50% to the known contents of the Shapley supercluster, with a corresponding increase in its contribution to the motion of the Local Group.

The theory of galaxy formation is reviewed briefly. From the evidence of clusters today, the primordial gas fraction was 20% or more. Thus, while the Universe is dominated by dark matter, gas plays an appreciable role in galaxy formation. Collapses of dwarf protogalaxies produce predominantly cold gas. It is argued that, in such cold collapses, the collapsed gas is largely self-gravitating. As a result, gas processes play a critical role in determining the visible structure of galaxies.

Powerful extragalactic radio sources are characterised by kpc-scale synchrotron emission associated with highly-collimated outflows of relativistic plasma. It is hypothesised that this outflowing plasma is powered by accretion processes concomitant with a central massive black hole. The radio morphologies of these sources comprise jets, lobes and for the most powerful sources, hotspots. At first sight, powerful extragalactic radio sources are a mixed group of objects, with the result that only some gross property delineates them further (e.g. steep-spectrum or flat-spectrum). However, there is accumulating observational evidence which suggests that it is the orientation of the radio axis to our line of sight that dictates their observed characteristics. This orientation dependence has been incorporated into ‘unified schemes’, which physically link apparently disparate radio source types via the random orientation of a ‘parent’ population on the plane of the sky. This paper summarises the ‘dual-population unified scheme’ paradigm investigated by Wall & Jackson (1997) and Jackson & Wall (1999) and discusses some of its implications with respect to radio source cosmology.

In this paper, we give a brief summary of the talks on accretion processes in AM Herculis systems which were presented at the ANU Astrophysical Theory Centre workshop on ‘Magnetic Fields and Accretion’. One of the topics to be discussed was the mechanism that leads to the formation of magnetically funnelled accretion flows in close interacting magnetic binaries. New solutions to the Bernoulli integral indicate that the field lines must be twisted and have a strong toroidal component at the base of the funnel in order for channelled flow to be possible. The magnetic field pressure of these toroidal fields first lifts the material out of the orbital plane allowing it to ‘levitate’ before freely falling along magnetic field lines towards the stellar surface. Results of recent calculations of the thermal structure and radiation properties of accretion funnels were also presented. These new 3D calculations allow for heating by the soft X-rays originating from the accretion shock, and by magnetic heating at the base of the funnel, and determine self-consistently the thermal structure, and the continuum and line emissions, allowing for both transfer of the external radiation field and the trapping of radiation within the funnel. Calculations were also presented of the expected properties of H- and He-like Fe lines originating from the accretion shock itself at the stellar surface. These lines are predicted to be rather strong and can be used as diagnostics of the accretion flow. Finally, the stability of the accretion shock was also addressed. In particular, it was shown that radiative cooling may cause thermal instability and an oscillatory behaviour, with two competing processes coming into play: bremsstrahlung cooling, which promotes instability, and cyclotron cooling, which tends to dampen the oscillations.

We have used two subsamples of superluminal quasars to test the relativistic beaming model, and to place useful constraints on the radio source orientation hypothesis and cosmology. Based on the variation of the observed ratio R of the core-to-lobe radio luminosities with proper motion μ for the subsample of lobe-selected quasars, we show that the observed R–μ data can be explained in terms of a bulk relativistic motion with Lorentz factor γ≈4. Also, from the observed proper motion versus redshift (μ–z) plot for this subsample, we show that γ≈4 implies a high density universe with deceleration parameter q0 = 0·5. Furthermore, from the observed (μ–z) plot for the two subsamples taken separately, we show that both γ and μ for the core-selected subsample exceed those of the lobe-selected subsample by a factor of 2 for the q0 = 0·5 world model. This result is demonstrated to be consistent with an orientation-based unified scheme in which lobe-selected quasars lie, on the average, at an angle which is a factor of ∼2–3 larger than that of their core-selected counterparts.

Optical and X-ray spectroscopy indicate that the X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 is seen through a cloud of gravitationally bound matter. We discuss an unstable negative feedback mechanism (originally proposed by Kotani et al. 1999), based on X-ray heating of this matter which controls the accretion rate when the source is in a low X-ray luminosity state. A deep minimum lasting ∼6 hours occurred during observations with the RXTE satellite over 1996 July 19–21. The shape of the X-ray pulses changed remarkably from before to after the minimum. These changes may be related to the transition from neutron star spin-down to spin-up which occurred at about the same time. Smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of the effect of adding matter with opposite angular momentum to an existing disk, show that it is possible for a number of concentric rings with alternating senses of rotation to co-exist in a disk. This could provide an explanation for the step-like changes in Ṗ which are observed in GX 1+4. Changes at the inner boundary of the disk occur at the same timescale as that imposed at the outer boundary. Reversals of material torque on the neutron star occur at a minimum in LX.

The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) is a blind search for extragalactic neutral hydrogen, covering the whole of the southern sky. We present the latest HI mass function (HIMF) constructed from a sample of 263 galaxies with declinations <−62°. Standard Σ1/Vmax and maximum likelihood techniques are used in the analysis. No upturn in the low-mass end of the HIMF is yet seen, though our selection procedure presently conspires against the lowest-mass galaxies.

We present the first results from a study of the radio continuum properties of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, (2dFGRS) based on thirty 2dF fields covering a total area of about 100 deg2. About 1·5% of galaxies with bJ < 19·4 mag. are detected as radio continuum sources in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). Of these, roughly 40% are star-forming galaxies and 60% are active galaxies (mostly low-power radio galaxies and a few Seyferts). The combination of 2dFGRS and NVSS will eventually yield a homogeneous set of around 4000 radio-galaxy spectra, which will be a powerful tool for studying the distribution and evolution of both AGN and starburst galaxies out to z ∼ 0·3.

A search for planetary nebulae was carried out using candidates selected by their infrared colours and 5 GHz radio emission. One new planetary nebula was identified on the basis of its small angular size, strong [O iii] emission and infrared colours. Another object, known as the possible planetary nebula Wray 16–28, is similarly identified as a planetary nebula. An undiscovered AGN was also found, and is classed as a Seyfert 2 galaxy on the basis of its strong O iii emission, linewidths of ∼500 km s−1, and 5 GHz radio flux. Low-resolution optical spectra are presented and distance estimates discussed.

A method is presented that will enable the bivariate luminosity/surface brightness distribution of galaxies to be determined from a relatively small HI selected sample. This will be taken from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). The advantages of using an HI sample in order to avoid the selection effects that are present at optical wavelengths are discussed. We are developing an algorithm to automatically extract a uniform sample of galaxies from the HIPASS data cubes and to determine the parameters of these galaxies. We have so far conducted tests involving both simulated sources injected into cubes with real noise and data from the Multibeam Deep survey. Results from these tests are encouraging.

A radio continuum survey of X-ray-identified weak-lined T Tauri stars (WTTs) in the newly-discovered η Chamaeleontis cluster has been completed using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The 10 known WTTs in the cluster form a unique sample of codistant late-type pre-main-sequence stars with ages of ~8 Myr and masses ranging from 0·1–1·0 M⊙. Our survey detected none of the 10 X-ray-emitting WTTs with 3σ sensitivity limits at 4·8 and 8·6 GHz (6·2 and 3·5 cm) of typically 0·4 mJy, corresponding to a radio luminosity of 4·5 ×1015 erg Hz−1 s−1. Rotation periods for these stars indicate that they are not, as a group, fast-rotating stars. The non-detection in the radio bands supports the findings of other radio surveys of inhomogeneous samples of young stars, where radio emission is fairly common (10–30%) among very young T Tauri stars across all late spectral types, but confined to rapidly-rotating F-G-K stars amongst older zero-age main sequence stars. Rotation, more than youth, appears to be the key to radio emission in young stars.

After reviewing the HI content and distribution in extreme dwarf irregular (dIrr) and dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies, previous searches for HI in dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies will be discussed. I will report on the recent detections of HI probably associated with the Local Group (LG) dSph Sculptor and dIrr/dSph Phoenix, obtained with the ATCA, along with a similar detection in the Centaurus Group dSph CEN_41. Data obtained for Sculptor, using the Parkes Multibeam system, will also be presented and the advantage of the wide field for such nearby objects will be emphasised. Finally, the possible origin of the gas and the general problem of the missing ISM in dSph galaxies will be discussed.

Numerical modelling (Nicholls & Storey 1999) suggests that the eclipse of a wedge of enhanced number density of mildly relativistic electrons is responsible for the variations in quiescent radio emission of the binary system V471 Tauri. In the model, the wedge of enhanced density is created by electrons accelerated in the interaction region of the magnetospheres of the two stars, which subsequently drift in azimuth while emitting gyrosynchrotron emission. We present here an analytic approximation to the opening angle of the wedge of enhanced density and show that it is consistent with the opening angle derived from numerical modelling for reasonable values of the input parameters.

We conducted spectroscopic and photometric observations of the optical companion of the X-ray transient RX J0117·6–7330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, during a quiescent state. The primary star is identified as a B0·5 IIIe with a mass M* = (18 ± 2)M⨀ and bolometric magnitude Mbol = –7·4 ± 0·2. The main spectral features are strong Hα emission, Hβ and Hγ emission cores with absorption wings, and narrow He I and O II absorption lines. Equivalent widths and full widths at half maximum of the main lines are listed. The average systemic velocity over our observing run is vr = (184 ± 4) km s−1; measurements over a longer period of time are needed to determine the binary period and the K velocity of the primary. We determine a projected rotational velocity v sin i = (145 ± 10) km s−1 for the Be star; if we assume a true rotational velocity at the equator v = (400 ± 50) km s−1, we deduce that the inclination angle of the system is i = (21 ± 3) deg.

In this paper, we report on HI observations of newly detected nearby dwarf galaxies from the first part of the Karachentsev catalogue which contains low surface brightness galaxies spotted on the POSS II. We performed HI observations of 220 galaxies using the 100-m radio telescope at Effelsberg, the Nançay radio telescope, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We discuss global parameters of the whole sample and the observations of the southern sample in more detail. Global parameters of the observed galaxies are as expected from the sample of nearby galaxies (Kraan-Korteweg & Tammann 1979). The increase of the number of known galaxies in the Local Volume (i.e. within a distance of 10 Mpc) could be as high as 20% for the whole sky.

Modelling of extreme scattering events suggests that the Galaxy's dark matter is an undetected population of cold, AU-sized, planetary-mass gas clouds. None of the direct observational constraints on this picture—thermal/non-thermal emission, extinction and lensing—are problematic. The theoretical situation is less comfortable, but still satisfactory. Galactic clouds can survive in their current condition for billions of years, but we do not have a firm description for either their origin or their evolution to the present epoch. We hypothesise that the proto-clouds formed during the quark–hadron phase transition, thereby introducing the inhomogeneity necessary for compatibility with light element nucleosynthesis in a purely baryonic universe. We outline the prospects for directly detecting the inferred cloud population. The most promising signatures are cosmic-ray-induced Hα emission from clouds in the solar neighbourhood, optical and X-ray flashes arising from cloud–cloud collisions, ultraviolet extinction, and three varieties of lensing phenomena.

The Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope is the next generation radio telescope. An international project is currently under way to design and build an instrument having an effective collecting area two orders of magnitude greater than that of any existing telescope. A number of separate studies are presently investigating how to design the Square Kilometre Array to best carry out the kinds of observations desired by the astronomical community. We present a summary of one of these studies, a workshop called The ‘Sub-microJansky Radio Sky’ held at the ATNF, Sydney, on 17 June 1998. This workshop addressed the nature of the radio sky at the very faint flux densities likely to be attainable by the Square Kilometre Array. In particular, each speaker investigated a separate population of radio sources and how the expected appearance of that population at such faint flux densities would dictate how to refine some of the design constraints for the Square Kilometre Array.

We summarise the HI properties of early-type galaxies, in particular the differences in HI morphologies observed in early-type galaxies of different luminosities. We find that in low-luminosity early-type galaxies the HI is almost always in a disk-like structure, with central surface densities high enough for star formation to occur. In a few luminous early-type galaxies the HI is also in a disk or in a ring-like structure, but in most luminous early-type galaxies the HI has a relatively irregular morphology. The surface densities in the HI disks in luminous early-type galaxies are lower than in the HI disks in low-luminosity early-type galaxies and no large-scale star formation should occur in these disks. We discuss these different HI characteristics in the context of other properties of early-type galaxies that correlate with luminosity.
