Let $E/F$ be a quadratic unramified extension of non-archimedean local fields and $\mathbb H$ a simply connected semisimple algebraic group defined and split over F. We establish general results (multiplicities, test vectors) on ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinguished Iwahori-spherical representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$. For discrete series Iwahori-spherical representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$, we prove a numerical criterion of ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinction. As an application, we classify the ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinguished discrete series representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$ corresponding to degree $1$ characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra.

In this paper, we investigate the twisted GGP conjecture for certain tempered representations using the theta correspondence and establish some special cases, namely when the L-parameter of the unitary group is the sum of conjugate-dual characters of the appropriate sign.

We introduce a new invariant, the conductor exponent, of a generic irreducible Casselman–Wallach representation of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n(F)$, where F is an archimedean local field, that quantifies the extent to which this representation may be ramified. We also determine a distinguished vector, the newform, occurring with multiplicity one in this representation, with the complexity of this vector measured in a natural way by the conductor exponent. Finally, we show that the newform is a test vector for $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n \times \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$ and $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n \times \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_{n - 1}$ Rankin–Selberg integrals when the second representation is unramified. This theory parallels an analogous nonarchimedean theory due to Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shalika; combined, this completes a global theory of newforms for automorphic representations of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$ over number fields. By-products of the proofs include new proofs of Stade’s formulæ and a new resolution of the test vector problem for archimedean Godement–Jacquet zeta integrals.

In [CDD22], we investigated the structure of $\ast $-isomorphisms between von Neumann algebras $L(\Gamma )$ associated with graph product groups $\Gamma $ of flower-shaped graphs and property (T) wreath-like product vertex groups, as in [CIOS21]. In this follow-up, we continue the structural study of these algebras by establishing that these graph product groups $\Gamma $ are entirely recognizable from the category of all von Neumann algebras arising from an arbitrary nontrivial graph product group with infinite vertex groups. A sharper $C^*$-algebraic version of this statement is also obtained. In the process of proving these results, we also extend the main $W^*$-superrigidity result from [CIOS21] to direct products of property (T) wreath-like product groups.

In Cartan’s PhD thesis, there is a formula defining a certain rank 8 vector distribution in dimension 15, whose algebra of authomorphism is the split real form of the simple exceptional complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak {f}_4$. Cartan’s formula is written in the standard Cartesian coordinates in $\mathbb {R}^{15}$. In the present paper, we explain how to find analogous formulae for the flat models of any bracket generating distribution $\mathcal D$ whose symbol algebra $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})$ is constant and 2-step graded, $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})=\mathfrak {n}_{-2}\oplus \mathfrak {n}_{-1}$.

The formula is given in terms of a solution to a certain system of linear algebraic equations determined by two representations $(\rho ,\mathfrak {n}_{-1})$ and $(\tau ,\mathfrak {n}_{-2})$ of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak {n}_{00}$ contained in the $0$th order Tanaka prolongation $\mathfrak {n}_0$ of $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})$.

Numerous examples are provided, with particular emphasis put on the distributions with symmetries being real forms of simple exceptional Lie algebras $\mathfrak {f}_4$ and $\mathfrak {e}_6$.

We show that an infinite group G definable in a $1$-h-minimal field admits a strictly K-differentiable structure with respect to which G is a (weak) Lie group, and we show that definable local subgroups sharing the same Lie algebra have the same germ at the identity. We conclude that infinite fields definable in K are definably isomorphic to finite extensions of K and that $1$-dimensional groups definable in K are finite-by-abelian-by-finite. Along the way, we develop the basic theory of definable weak K-manifolds and definable morphisms between them.

We prove a general formula that relates the parity of the Langlands parameter of a conjugate self-dual discrete series representation of $\operatorname { {GL}}_n$ to the parity of its Jacquet-Langlands image. It gives a generalization of a partial result by Mieda concerning the case of invariant $1/n$ and supercuspidal representations. It also gives a variation of the result on the self-dual case by Prasad and Ramakrishnan.

We characterize the fractional Dehn twist coefficient (FDTC) on the n-stranded braid group as the unique homogeneous quasimorphism to $\mathbb {R}$ of defect at most 1 that equals 1 on the positive full twist and vanishes on the $(n-1)$-stranded braid subgroup. In a different direction, we establish that the slice-Bennequin inequality holds with the FDTC in place of the writhe. In other words, we establish an affine linear lower bound for the smooth slice genus of the closure of a braid in terms of the braid’s FDTC. We also discuss connections between these two seemingly unrelated results. In the appendix, we provide a unifying framework for the slice-Bennequin inequality and its counterpart for the FDTC.

We obtain a new interpretation of the cohomological Hall algebra $\mathcal {H}_Q$ of a symmetric quiver Q in the context of the theory of vertex algebras. Namely, we show that the graded dual of $\mathcal {H}_Q$ is naturally identified with the underlying vector space of the principal free vertex algebra associated to the Euler form of Q. Properties of that vertex algebra are shown to account for the key results about $\mathcal {H}_Q$. In particular, it has a natural structure of a vertex bialgebra, leading to a new interpretation of the product of $\mathcal {H}_Q$. Moreover, it is isomorphic to the universal enveloping vertex algebra of a certain vertex Lie algebra, which leads to a new interpretation of Donaldson–Thomas invariants of Q (and, in particular, re-proves their positivity). Finally, it is possible to use that vertex algebra to give a new interpretation of CoHA modules made of cohomologies of non-commutative Hilbert schemes.
