This study investigates the labor market under increased automation of middle-skilled jobs wherein worker suitability for these jobs is considered. We examine two effects of increased automation on workers. The first effect is the possibility of replacement of middle-skilled workers by machines. The second effect is the diversity in job mismatch probabilities of workers. If machines perform a worker’s suitable jobs more (or less) than the worker’s unsuitable jobs, then the worker’s job mismatch probability rises (or declines). Because workers who have larger job mismatch probabilities remain job seekers, it is more difficult for a firm to find a suitable worker. Due to these two effects, underemployment rises.

We model an economy where present biased preferences affect the bequest leaving decisions. Using Bequest in the Utility (BIU) setup, we show that the optimal inheritance tax rate under present bias can be derived in terms of estimable sufficient statistics. This optimal tax rate decreases with the level of temptation and a subsidy can be optimal at some level of bequests received. We then use the Barro-Becker Dynastic (BBD) setup to derive the expression for the optimal inheritance tax rates. We observe that if the agents internalize the taxes on the amount of bequest that they leave (sensitive generations), present bias and optimal tax rates are negatively related as in BIU, that is, providing an incentive by extending subsidies or lowering taxes is recommended to subside the effects of temptation. However, if agents ignore the taxes to be paid by their descendants on the inheritance left (ignorant generations), optimal tax rates increase with the level of present bias. This is because the present bias reduces the tax base and the rationale of providing incentives does not work anymore. Our calibration exercise supports all these theoretical findings.

We examine, conditional on structural shocks, the macroeconomic performance of different countercyclical capital buffer (CCyB) rules in small open economy estimated medium-scale Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) model. We find that rules based on the credit gap create a trade-off between the stabilization of fluctuations originating in the housing market and fluctuations caused by foreign demand shocks. The trade-off disappears if the regulator responds to house prices instead. It turns out that the welfare-maximising simple CCyB rule implies responding to house prices only and not to the credit gap. Such rule also leads to significant welfare gains compared to the no CCyB case.

Credibility is elusive, but Blinder [(2000) American Economic Review 90, 1421–1431.] generated a consensus in the literature by arguing that “A central bank is credible if people believe it will do what it says.” To implement this idea, we first measure people’s beliefs by using survey data on inflation’s expectations. Second, we compare beliefs with explicit (or tacit) targets, taking into account the uncertainty in our estimate of beliefs (asymptotic 95% robust confidence intervals). Whenever the target falls into this interval we consider the central bank credible. We consider it not credible otherwise. We apply our approach to study the credibility of the Brazilian Central Bank (BCB) by using a world-class database—the Focus Survey of forecasts. Using monthly data from January 2007 until April 2017, we estimate people’s beliefs of inflation 12 months ahead, coupled with a robust estimate of its asymptotic 95% confidence interval. Results show that the BCB was credible 65% of the time, with the exception of a few months in the beginning of 2007 and during the interval between mid-2013 throughout mid-2016.

We study the effects of taxation on the growth rate of the real per capita GDP in a sample of 21 OECD countries, over the period 1965–2010. To do this, we estimate a version of the model proposed by Mankiw, Romer and Weil [(1992) Quarterly Journal of Economics 107, 407–437.] augmented to consider both direct and indirect effects of taxation on investment share parameters. We employ a semi-parametric technique—namely, a Finite Mixture Model—which combines features from mixed effect models for panel data and cluster analysis methods to account for country-specific unobserved heterogeneity. Our results suggest that taxes have a negative impact on growth: in the baseline model, the coefficient estimates indicate that a 10% cut in personal income tax rate (respectively corporate income tax rate) may raise the GDP growth rate by 0.6% (respectively 0.3%).

We study the impact of uncertainty shocks using a disaggregated model featuring US state-level unemployment, and uncertainty measured using state-level Google search data. Importantly, the model captures spillovers across states and identifies substantial differences in peak responses and time dynamics. Moreover, the importance of national factors in propagating the effect of uncertainty is also heterogeneous across states, but less relevant than state-level factors. These heterogeneous effects are related to state-specific industry compositions and fiscal positions. In addition, we highlight the usefulness of disaggregated data in models of uncertainty and economic activity for the USA, based on the superior ability of the disaggregate model to predict aggregate uncertainty and unemployment.

This paper quantitatively examines the macroeconomic effects of size-dependent financial frictions on capital misallocation and aggregate total factor productivity. Based on panel data from China’s manufacturing sector, I find that among non-state-owned enterprises, (i) the dispersion of the marginal product of capital is large and persistent and (ii) large firms tend to have higher leverage, and lower mean and dispersion of the marginal product of capital than their small counterparts. This paper analyzes a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model with heterogeneous agents and size-dependent financial frictions. By calibrating the model to a Chinese firm-level dataset, I show that in addition to matching the aforementioned stylized facts, the economy with a size-dependent borrowing constraint is able to reproduce the observed negative correlation between firm size and the marginal product of capital, as well as generate quantitatively modest TFP loss. Furthermore, ignoring firms’ size-dependent financing patterns may lead to an overstatement of TFP loss due to financial frictions.

This study constructs a cost-of-living index in a cash-credit goods economy. I first argue that the conventional cost-of-living index entails internal inconsistency when applied to the cash-credit goods economy and then develop an internally consistent cost-of-living index. This new index suggests that the interest rate directly affects the cost of living, and that its effect is asymmetric. Applying the index to the US data for the past 20 years suggests that this effect on the aggregate price index is quantitatively nonnegligible.

This paper applies the common stochastic trends representation approach to the time series of total factor productivity (TFP) and the relative price of investment (RPI) to investigate the modeling of neutral technology (NT) and investment-specific technology (IST) and its econometric ramifications on the analysis of general equilibrium model. The permanent and transitory movements in both series are estimated efficiently via Markov chain Monte Carlo methods using band matrix algorithms. The results indicate that TFP and the RPI are, each, well represented by a differenced first-order autoregressive process. In addition, their time series share a common trend component that we interpret as reflecting changes in general purpose technology. These results are consistent with studies that suggest that (1) the traditional view of assuming that NT and IST follow independent processes is not supported by the features of the time series and (2) improper specification of secular trends may distort estimation and inference. Notably, the findings provide some guidance to minimize the effect of idiosyncratic and common trend misspecifications on the analysis of impulse dynamics and propagation mechanisms in macroeconomic models.

Unemployment insurance benefits are often extended during recessions. Existing research shows that this policy increases the unemployment rate and the duration of unemployment. But less is known about why these changes occur. I construct a job search model with an endogenous participation decision to quantify the contributions of (i) search effort, (ii) job selectivity, and (iii) labor market participation, to changes in unemployment outcomes. In a model calibrated to the US economy, I show that the increased participation accounts for a large fraction of the increase in the unemployment rate following a permanent extension of benefits. This finding indicates the importance of changes in the participation decision of workers facing extended benefits for the unemployment rate—a mechanism that is understudied and frequently overlooked in the quantitative labor market research exploring the impact of UI policies.

We develop an extended real business cycle model with financially constrained firms and non-pledgeable intangible capital. Based on a model-consistent series for firms’ borrowing conditions, we find, within a structural vector autoregression framework, that, in response to an adverse financial shock, tangible investment falls more than intangible investment. This positive co-movement between tangible and intangible investment as well as the relative resilience of intangible investment pose a challenge for the theoretical model. We show that investment-specific adjustment costs help in reconciling the model with the observed empirical evidence. The estimation of the theoretical model using a Bayesian limited information approach yields support for the presence of much larger adjustment costs for intangible investment than for tangible investment.

Introducing susceptible-infected-recovered epidemiology dynamics with vaccines into an endogenous growth model, we investigate the impact of government infectious disease policy on macroeconomic performance. We find that any expenditure that improves health, whether to reduce the contact rate or increase the recovery rate or the vaccination rate, and regardless of whether it comes directly from the households or the government, has a positive impact on economic growth, but does not necessarily improve the welfare. The reason people’s health has improved but their welfare has fallen is because government expenditures must be covered by taxes, which will reduce their disposable income and consumption.
