Summary
Circumvallate placenta is a placental anomaly that results in the basal plate (maternal side) of the placenta being larger than the chorionic plate (fetal side). It is a difficult condition to accurately diagnose prenatally and may or may not be clinically significant to the patient. Ultrasound findings can be misleading and difficult to interpret. Patients with symptoms of bleeding during mid-gestation, increase in watery discharge, and ultrasound findings consistent with circumvallate placenta are more likely to have complications of the condition. Complications include growth restriction, preterm labor, and abruption. Due to the concern for these complications, some providers will opt to monitor the pregnancy with growth ultrasounds.
