Placental abruption is a serious obstetric emergency with a wide range of presentations, severity, and management options. It is a clinical diagnosis of exclusion and should remain high on the differential of any obstetrical triage workup given its variable presentation and potential severity of maternal and fetal complications. In this case we summarize the presentation, differential diagnosis, workup, and management of placental abruption and provide insight into the use of certain diagnostic tests and possible preventative measures.
