The number of internally displaced people globally is increasing. This chapter outlines the scope of the phenomenon, with particular focus on Colombia, the country which in 2017 has the largest number of internally displaced in absolute terms. The chapter challenges the often uncritical understanding of displacement and calls for a more nuanced approach to studying the process – one which puts people in the focus. It proposes to think, analyse and conceptualise displacement through the lens of place. Place is a suitable framework since it encompasses social, political, economic, historic and also very personal dimensions. It has a temporal component and therefore permits to emphasise the processual nature of displacement. The chapter makes a case for analysing displacement as both the loss and making of place.
