Je ne parlerai pas de Jacques Derrida comme du grand philosophe qu'il aura été. Je n'aurai pas l'ambition de dire toute l'importance son œuvre, bien que (comme nous tous) je crois cette importance capitale, inestimable. Je n'aurai pas la prétention, du haut d'un savoir présumé que je n'ai pas, auquel je ne crois pas, de dire la place de Jacques parmi les ‘grands philosophes’ (palmarès médiatique: catégorie 20e siècle, la première place se joue entre Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Derrida …).
Je n'aurai pas non plus la prétention de parler de Jacques comme de mon maître, ce qu'il fut, incontestablement, ce qu'il reste, évidemment. Tout ce que j'ai pu penser, non seulement dans le contexte du travail de Derrida lui-même (sur lequel j'ai écrit sans doute plus qu'un autre, par rapport auquel il m'a lui-même reproché un jour, voyant que j'avais encore critiqué un compte-rendu de sa pensée que je croyais simplificateur malgré ses bonnes intentions, I will not talk about Jacques Derrida as the great philosopher he will have been. I will not be so ambitious as to try to state all the importance of his work, even though (like all of us), I believe that importance to be capital and inestimable. I will not have the pretension, from the height of a supposed knowledge I do not have and do not believe in, to say what is Jacques's place among the ‘great philosophers’ (media prize-list: in the twentieth-century category, the first prize is between Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Derrida …).
