Interest in medieval approaches to narrative invention, adaptation, and reception of romance has inspired investigation of the methods and expectations of composition in the time Chrétien wrote. The goal is to design critical approaches that reflect, insofar as possible, Chrétien's art and to use that knowledge to interpret his romances. Thus, in many ways, this central section of the Bibliography looks back to the work in the preceding sections as well as to much in the following sections. Inclusion here rather than in those sections is determined largely by emphasis on medieval theoretical presuppositions and efforts to theorize these in critically useful ways, including their relationship to modern theoretical and terminological concerns.
